Great old guy but had to laugh at his stories (car)

Great old guy up the road stops in from time to time. He has a beautiful 1934 Willys Overland Whippet that he restored and takes a lot of well deserved pride in. He was telling me in the spring he turned down $300 000 for it and that there's only 2 in the world and his us the better one. This morning he stopped by and said he just turned down a million and the other one sold for 23 million an Barret Jackson so his is worth more than that! I swear the older the gentleman gets the taller the tales are. Always enjoy his visits ,great old guy lots of entertaining stories

Yep! I had a neighbor who told me his IH 303 combine harvested 80 acres of soybeans one day. Then he told another neighbor it was 100 acres.

A close friend of mine turns 91 tomorrow. He has been in a home for about three years now.

About a year ago he sold his 1926 (27?) Willys Knight. It was in very good condition and needed nothing aside from a good dusting off and a little exercise. I didn't ask what it sold for but believe it was around $20-25K.

He was a Willys fan and sold a shed load of Whippet parts about ten years ago.

Good morning. I've got the remains of a small trailer my father used for years before he got rid of us kids and could afford a truck. The axle of that trailer he always said was from a whippet but he didn't say what year. Maybe your neighbor could add some value with a matching trailer. On a related note, my sister and a friend are both Upper Peninsula dairy farmers and are visiting Prince Edward Island in late September. I mentioned having met you via this forum and said I'd ask if you or a farming neighbor might have time for a farm visit in late September. of course If you need more info I could get my wife to figure out email. My dad always appreciated a good BS'er ..... he said it is a skill that very few had and is probably a lost art these days. Now some guys are liars, but BS'ing isn't lying, it's just a special form of stretching the truth .....

Lol no I just listen and laugh,he's a great old guy but I take everything he says with more than a couple grains of salt.

I saw some hail damaged beans like that. The farmer made one pass around the field and put the combine back in the shed. So maybe he did do 80-100 acres one day.LOL Tom

I'm surprised, but I have a couple of "kids" on our shift at work that are pretty good with the tall tales. Of the eleven of us, six are 45-54, the other five are all under 30, youngest is 24.

He has been more places, raced more carts/cars/motorcycles/boats/snowmobiles/airplanes than I have ever even seen. At 24, he has risen to management in all three of his previous jobs, has a six year old son with a girl from out of state, and another with his now-wife, and they just bought a $300K home, which he could have paid cash for he says.

The next youngest can really spool some yarn, usually more with tales from the trailer trash lifestyle he grew up in, and still falls back to today.

I guess there is hope for the future of the "Bend the Truth Club" after all.

I once had an "old" fellow tell me that he could tell any story any way he wanted because all the people that were actually there were DEAD!

Thats an extra rare car for sure. A internet seach shows they stopped making them in '32 ('33 model). But I wouldnt let facts spoil the gentlemans yarn........

Had a guy like that at work years ago.
Went to the lake with the boating club, fastest boat on the lake he tells me.
Another guy says he has never seen the boat off the trailer.

Takes his Goldwing to the mountains in Colorado, never has to downshift going up or coming down.

Cartoon "Dilbert" has/had a character they called topper! Anybody told a story, topper could top it!

K Effective, I've known some like that.

A place I worked many years ago hired one, in an upper management position. High enough he could fire people at will, especially if you dared question any of his stories!

Some like...

Winning the Indy 500 in his special built street car that he drove there, raced and won, drove home. But somehow the records were lost for that year...

His mother's yacht, that she operates between here and Africa, as the worlds richest diamond dealer. He built the boat, it was so long he had to calculate the curve of the earth into the keel. But he doesn't remember the overall length...

Winning the world championship motocross race with a 4 foot stick impaled through his calf. Trained to ignore pain! And, also it didn't leave a scar...

Being on a secret mission on a PT boat. All he can say about it was a crew member was named Kennedy. Lets see, that would make him how old...

The list goes on. This was severe, beyond a BS'r. The man could not even communicate without lapsing into some outlandish bigger, better, faster story. And expected everyone to actually believe him!

I would suspect there were some mental illness involved!

Worked with a kid once, he was MAYBE 20 years old. Claimed to be "retired from the Air Force on a PTSD disability", was an A-10 Warthog crew chief, Desert Storm veteran, saw things nobody should ever see.

I'm a retired Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer, my other work mate at the time was a Navy SeaBee, two tours in Viet Nam.

We just looked at him and smiled, let him run his mouth.

He didn't last long.

An old man in our community told of his powerful tractor and how it could mow brush. He sated that it gad a heavier knife would cut anything that could pass through the guards. Somebody asked if his tractor was a diesel and he replied that he could easily convert to diesel. Found he had a John Deere G and model 5 mower, His kids de-tasseled
corn with a rifle/Walk across the ends of rows and shoot the end stalk tassel with a high powered rife and de-tassel the row.

Well the rows are pretty straight when using GPS but the slight difference in elevation might be a problem.

I used to say about one big talker 'You have to take what he says with a block of salt.'.

thanks for the positive response, the girls are excited to have friends waiting to meet them there. This forum brings a lot of people together.

We had an old hermit that lived alone up on the hill He had a small farm and a JD "D" tractor. He had been to Alaska in the war and us boys would sneak off and go up to see him. We thought he was the smartest man alive. He swore every other word and told such big lies but we believed every word he said . He would let us sware and smoke cigarettes and he would give us hard cider We thought he was a hero. Then we would go home and try to tell these stories to the old man and he would say you boys believe his big lies and we would get mad because the old man was not a believer We would say what do you know ? You ever been to Alaska where they have that big equipment ? LOL Oh the fun it is now 70 years later to look back and still laugh about it. >> Old Scovy

Your quite welcome,it's a great place for like minded folks to make connections. My wife and I share the same email, chances are she'll be responding but she's on board and looking forward to meeting them and a farm tour as well!
