White oak trees

I have two White oak trees that leaves turned brown.Has anyone heard anything about any disease or insect damaging them? Thank You GP

I don't know where you are, but Oak Wilt is really killing oak trees in Michigan. It kills them quite quickly once they become infected and spreads to surrounding oaks.

Some white oaks will survive Oak Wilt but reds will not. Kills them quick. They suggest to rip up the roots so that it can not be spread to the surrounding trees thru the roots.

Now they say we have to worry about the Asian long horned beetle killing all of the other trees we have here. Dutch Elm disease, Chestnut blight, Emerald Ash borer, Oak wilt, "needlecast" on Pine trees, gypsy moths and Asian long horned beetles, pretty soon we won't have anything left here but boxelder, willow, and Chinese elm. Seems you can't find anything that will kill those worthless things

Sorry about your trees. I have heard white oak lumber prices are very high right now. If they won't make it , perhaps you could sell them. At least not a total loss.

The cutting the tree roots did not help in the two acre patch we had. Lost two trees a year for 7 years. We have since moved so don't know how many have died lately.

Better hope not. The guy who bought my red oak logs said white oak is worth a fortune right now because of the need for it to make barrels for the Bourbon industry.

Cut them soon as they get a green ring in the log and they are then only pallet lumber. Cut almost all of the oaks out of my woods 10-15 years ago, they were dying like flies. Ended up with a fair amount of logs but could have been worth a lot more if harvested earlier. live and learn.

Have you had a drought recently? We had a major drought here in Southern Illinois in 2012. Our retired county agent said at the time a lot of them will suffer in five years. That it takes five years for the serious efects to show up. I didn't ask if it was fatal, or if they would survive. I ran some sucker rods in the ground and wallered them around to make a hole about 18 inches deep, around the drip line, then filled them wit 12-12-12. We'll see if it works.

I had heard that this was the thing to do for trees that had the Gall Wasp damage. It would get nutrition to the leaves, because the Gall nodules were restricting the flow of nutrients through the branch.
