1926 Gotfredson

Hello, first post, great forum!

I have a 1926 Gotfredson farm truck with:

- 6v positive ground system
- internally grounded generator ([u:5b54c8f40d]no F terminal[/u:5b54c8f40d]) with thermostatically controlled internal regulation (I think).
- Delco Remy generator model 941-F (3 brush)
- solid state cutout (no regulator)

How do I wire the amp meter and headlamp switch? How do I regulate the amps?

The cutout has a BAT and a ARM terminal. The ARM terminal on the cutout connects to the one single wire coming out of the generator (the A terminal).

Seems like the truck originally had a OFF, DIM, ON headlamp switch and a separate Magneto switch. Those were replaced with aftermarket pull knobs and the wiring needs to be redone.

And, thanks for this article!!!

"How do I wire the amp meter and headlamp switch? How do I regulate the amps?"

You would wire the ampmeter like the bottom diagram on the article.

The headlamps would get power from the "-" side of the ampmeter, would have no other connection to the charging circuit since there is no field terminal.

Evidently you don't regulate the amps, only adjust the volts by moving the position of the 3rd brush, at least that's my understanding of it... Little before my time!

welcome to the forums
never heard of a Gotfredson truck but there were hundreds of auto n trunk makers in the early 1900's
that didn't make it or were merged with bigger corporations
hope you will post some pics of it
the great ppl on here love to check out things in every condition from junk to pristine and help solving
problems you may encounter along the way
some may even have some parts hidden away they don't know what it fits
good luck with your quest in keeping another example of our past around
here's a pretty informative web page on them

Please, I wanna see pictures. Sounds like it's a real interesting and unusual truck. I like the very old and unusual stuff. If you can't figure out how to post the pics on this site there are a few gurus who will guide you through it if you call for help.

Yes, that is my web site.

Here's a recent photo. The vehicle had been sitting in a garage for 30 years. It is now located in San Diego after being towed from Illinois.

Here's what I found online about a Delco Remy model 941-P (not sure how my 941-F is different).

Once I have it running I will see what it's putting out.

It's a very informitive web site tvscum
I spent a lot of time reading it today
as I stated earlier I had never heard of them before
and from your site I learned a lot
and from what i see they were around for a long time
as for your generator question that set up sounds similar to the earlier Allis set up
my WD uses a 3 position switch for the gen and head lights 6 volt positive ground
trouble is for me all 3 of mine were converted to 12 volt alts before I got them and those switches
were removed but I do have a few of them
maybe post your question in the Allis forum someone there should be able t tell you how they work on
the Allis's and it should relate somewhat to your set up

Thank you for the pics. Looks like a real man's truck. Its in pretty good shape for its age. Must be an older restoration?

Thanks for the replies! I will check out the Allis section. It looks like the truck was restored and re-wired with aftermarket knobs, gas primer, etc over the years. That brake fluid can is now serving as the gas tank apparently.

Again, I have not started it yet because it has no spark and the magneto is getting rebuilt.

Anyway, the generator definitely does not have a Field terminal so I can't adjust generator output using a lighting switch resistor, I guess. I took the generator apart and the adjustment of the third brush seems pretty simple.

I am resurrecting this old post to ask... how do I polarize an internally grounded generator with no field (F) terminal? Wired like this...

Momentarily jumper the "B" and "G" terminals at the cutout.
