IH 1086 pre cleaner

I have an early model 1086 that has something I haven't noticed on other similar models. Mine has an external precleaner above the hood in
front of the exhaust. Can anyone tell me why this has it and others don't? I'm just curious. Picture to show what I am talking about.

I believe larger aftermarket pre-cleaners were installed on some models. That might be what you have.
 
Some dealer convinced someone they need it at some point in time. Supposed to do just what it says clean some on the dust BEFORE it reaches the real air cleaner. Was or is several aftermarket brands.
 
Most likely the former owner decided he needed it due to a previous model tractor that would plug the air cleaner prematurely. Actually, the precleaner above and in front of radiator does a really good job on those models. The original 806 for instance had a very poor baffle up there and filled air cleaner very rapidly in dirty conditions. I installed the improved baffle along with dual element air cleaners on many 06 series tractors with very good results. That external precleaner was never a factory option on that model.
 
You simply have an aftermarket pre-cleaner that was sold either though a IH dealership or a farm supply store.

It looks to me to be a "Turbo II", but there's probably some look-alikes out there.

You might try GOOGLING "Turbo II precleaner".
