Hi everyone,
Im new here and new to all things tractor. long story short the steering shaft snapped. I replaced w/ new aftermarket shaft along w/ new upper and lower bearings. I ran into this problem while putting the steering box back together. no matter how many shims i use that still looks like a bit of room between the tube and the steering box. the bearings are seated correctly. did I do something incorrectly. Thanks in advance.

Welcome Venus8n!

If you are sure the bearings are fully seated, it probably isn't anything you are doing wrong.

Do you still have the old shaft? If so, do some measuring, probably find the aftermarket shaft is made wrong. Very common with aftermarket parts.

If it is made wrong, you can send it back, or machine it to the proper length, or make a thick shim.

8N use two different types of steering gears, the earlier like the 9N, 2N tractors and later like the cars used with balls in the steering box. Cannot tell from picture what you have. I don't remember any shims in the steering box on my 2N when I had it apart to put new bearings in several years ago.

Hello again, many thanks for your direction. I have no experience so I was hoping if someone could tell me if this RT side gear (the gear that wroks with the shaft and worm gear) is usable or is worn out ? If these images are not up to snuff I can take more with my cell phone.

thx
