John Deere why.

So good that it made me want one, with all those advantages, but......there does not seem to be big 2 cylinder offerings in there current catalog???????????

That was actually a really cool old video. I suppose the ability to run very low-grade gasoline/kerosene/tractor fuel was a big selling point in the '30s and '40s. Seemed like that was the biggest selling point that he was trying to get across.

Makes me want to get the carburetor back on my JD 50 and take a cruise around the farm.

A bto friend of my fathers traded an 80 in on an 830,
which I think was the last and biggest 2 cyl JD in
1961 I think. He said it used too much diesel. In
about 1965 he went to trade and was disgusted at
what JD dealer offered for trade in on it so he
bought a MM G1000 Vista.
I always figured it was fuel efficiency that killed the
popper.

That is not even close to being true. The JD 2 cylinder diesels were the most fuel efficient tractors at the time. I think it was the R and then the 720 that held the record for the most fuel efficient rating at the Nebraska tests. The 80/8020/830 weren't too far behind.

Yes and they held that record until the 1980's when the Yanmar built John Deere model 1650 barely beat them ! That was quite a long run.

(quoted from post at 18:37:48 08/24/17) My John Deere went pop pop but the noise came from either the transmission or rear axle.

Your not the first person I've heard say that. I have never actually had to work a 2 cylinder hard, but the drive-train "looks" about bullet proof. All of the gears look very substantial. Was this a common issue with any of the JD's of that vintage?

I use a 60 to pull a manure spreader sometimes, and a 50 or B on a sickle mower to keep the ditches clear. Nothing like heavy ground engagement work like they were using them in the 40's-60's for. I'm not arguing with you at all, just interested. Worst issue I've ever actually seen was an A that got locked between gears at a tractor show.
