IH 444 stuck clutch update....

Well, did all the easy stuff...no break loose. My buddy said it didn't have any inspection plate on bottom...well it does. Now I see a throwout bearing , clutch disc , pressure plate and flywheel and a splined input shaft to trans. We got the discs so they would rotate when clutch pedal down. Really free without hardly any effort. Not stuck. Disc is hubbed to trans input which spins also. I don't see any other disc but engine/flywheel is still stuck to trans shaft. The service manual got lost / damaged in flood. Can I assume this is a two stage clutch and that there is a shaft within a shaft and the large outside shaft is for pto and inner for trans? All run by one pedal and throw-out bearing ? Only problem is...where is this "other" power to the trans clutch disc at ?? I'm just not seeing it or even where it would be. Excuse my ignorance but could use some more answers here. The disc that is in sight, was NOT stuck and throw-out bearing and all works good. Help please. RB

I don't believe that has a 2 stage clutch. Most Ih's with the live power had the shaft for the clutch, and the other was driven off the back of the pressure plate. Only one disc in the clutch. Should be a pilot bearing in the center of the flywheel for the input shaft of the transmission. Might be froze up, though not very likely.

This clutch disc has a hub and is splined to the input shaft going back into trans case. With clutch pedal down, I can spin the disc/shaft round and round with a screwdriver real easy...mind you, this is with the tractor in gear. That shaft does not connect to the trans. also, with clutch pedal down and that disc loose, I can turn flywheel/pressure plate assy and it will turn the engine AND rear wheels? The engine and trans are solidly connected all while the clutch pedal is down and that one disc/shaft spins freely. It's as tho there is a small dia shaft inside the large one. By the way, this large splined shaft is probably 2" in dia. Why would this clutch/pressure plate be labeled " Spicer Dual Disc Clutch ?

You can do an experiment.

Block the clutch pedal down.

With the PTO engaged, try to turn the PTO shaft, watch the disc you can see, see if it turns with the PTO shaft..

Then jack up one rear wheel, transmission in high gear, rock the rear wheel back and forth, see what moves. If the clutch is still stuck, the engine will try to turn with the wheel.

He bought this tractor all re-furbished. It shows no signs of ever being yellow but does have a very nice heavy IH loader on it with an aux pump on front driven off engine crank. SN just says it's a 1968. No sign of IND. anywhere. Could it have been an option on a regular 444 farm tractor? Assuming it has the dual clutch ( which it DOES say right on the pressure plate) I'm just not seeing where another disc could be that would be in between two plates , all actuated by this one throw-out bearing and this one pressure plate and fingers. It's the only one. But I also don't buy that the input shaft where it is 2" in dia is the same one , and size, that enters the pilot bearing. That would be huge for a small utility tractor it seems. Anyone have an exploaded view/cutaway view of this unit? Or an idea where on here I could access one? Thanks again. RB

The parts manual shows breakdown and there are indeed two discs. I hated them clutches what little I had to do with them.

Yur right , Pete. I just searched and found a view of it. It definately is the dual one and it IS a shaft within a shaft deal. The back (pto) discs were not stuck/rusted so I can't believe the front one is that stuck either. Just harder to get at. I think I can loosen up the pressure plate again and / or take bolts out and slide the whole thing rearward enough to access the front disc to get it loosened. I don't see how anything can come out of place as it's all still on splines. Thoughts?
