454 transmission

This tractor has been setting for over 10 years when I bought
it, it was in really good shape didn't take a whole lot to get
it running, got all the leaks fixed and hopefully I have the rust
monster in the gas tank stopped. I've changed the fluid and
filter the trouble I'm having is it is slow to take off and
sometimes it will hesitates and then takes off, the 3 point
works just fine the same as the PTO. Could it be I need to
replace the clutch?

If the TA hydraulic pressure is low or inconsistent, the TA clutches could be causing the hesitation. Is there a difference between having the TA in reduction compared to direct? Does the tractor pull a load with no slipping when it is doing field work? Does it slip when starting in road gear. IIRC the master clutch is very conventional and no hydraulic components, so if it seems TA related, I would look to TA apply pressures and the Sprag clutch. Jim

I have a 454 like yours. There is adjustment for the clutch on the clutch pedal. There is a threaded linkage and clevis arrangement that needs to be adjusted to allow the pedal to be so far from the foot rest and so much free play. Check your operator's manual for the distance to the foot rest and the amount of free play. I'm not at home now so I can't tell you the exact figures. Let me know if you need more assistance.

That is likely the issue. Give it an inch on the pedal before it gets hard to push with your hand. That is called Freeplay and is usually an inch to an inch and a half measured at the pedal.

Hi, to adjust the clutch, two adjustments:
1) Adjust the bolt with jamb nut until the distance from floor board to top of clutch pedal is 6 inches.
2) adjust free travel by clevis on end of clutch rod until 1 3/4 inches of free travel is achieved.

Make sure the clutch return spring is not broken or missing as it's purpose is to keep the clutch release bearing from touching the pressure plate fingers when the clutch is engaged.
If it is the original clutch, it is probably a 2 pad clutch, if you are replacing the clutch replace it with a 6 pad clutch from a 684.

The manual I have is the "Operator's manual". It covers operation, maintenance, lubrication, adjustment for clutch, park brake, shift linkage, and governor linkage. It also covers trouble shooting. You can purchase one from this website, Jensales or Binder Books. The transmission on a 454 is a 4 speed synchromesh with a high, low and reverse. This gives you 8 speeds forward and 4 in reverse. The manual states that the top of the clutch pedal should be 6 inches from the foot platform and the free play should be one inch.

While I was looking at the clutch linkage I discovered that the spring your talking about is broke, could this be my trouble?

If the pedal is coming up to the foot plate yes, if hanging down the 1.75, no but needs to be replaced to avoid wear of T/O bearing. Some 454 tractors do have TAs. Some are Hydrostatic, some are 8f/4r trans. Jim

Hi, as the other Jim says if the spring is broken it is causes the throwout bearing to always contact the pressure plate fingers.
Eventually the throwout bearing seizes and wares the fingers off the pressure plate and eventually someday you go to step on the clutch to stop the tractor and the clutch doesn't release.

If you have no free play that probably indicates the clutch pads are worn. On the 54/74/84/85/95 series tractors as the clutch pads ware the clutch pedal free play decreases. Try adjusting the clutch pedal. There is an inspection plate that can be removed on the bottom of the clutch housing but really can't see much other than throwout bearing and pressure plate.
The springs also get weak on the pressure plate. Very easy tractor to do a clutch replacement if there is no front end loader.
Replace, pilot and throwout bearings, clutch with 6 pad clutch and pressure plate.

The pedal is at the 6" I replaced the spring today, a friend told me because the tractor has set so long it needs to be worked,if the hr.meter is right it has less than 1700 hrs on it.
