My tach is not working on an 856 I just got at an auction. I spun the cable with a drill and the tach seems to be ok. I'm thinking it must be the drive gear assembly ? Is it much to change that gear ? Does that whole housing have to come off to get to the gear ? Does the gear usually go before the tach or cable ? This is my 9th red tractor I have and the only one that the tach does not work. I haven't had to fix any tachs yet. love the tractor so far

Thanks

Willie

WIllie....I don't even know what an 856 is.....but usually if the cable turns the tach - you can look in the drive assembly while tractor is running and see if it is turning- if you can see it. If it is not turning- usually there is a bolt that holds it in....or the assembly "unscrews". Good luck .

If the cable works the tach then it is in the drive. There is a set screw in the housing that hold the gear in there I believe have not worked on one in 30 years. When mine quit after fixing about the 3 rd time I just let it go. That was on an 806 same set up though.
