860 transmission noise

My Ford 860 has started to make a noise from the transmission. With the engine running and the transmission in neutral it makes a noise. If I
put in the clutch the noise stops. Any idea what it might be?

I'm with DR, the symptoms point to a failing transmission bearing.

Wonder what the REST of the story is, IMHO, a failed bearing would have been RARE when tractors of that era got the snot worked out of them and earned their keep every day.

Unless this tractor is still working hard as ^&%$ it would be unheard of for a tranny bearing to fail UNLESS there's a lack of lube or the tranny oil is REALLY nasty.

What's the REST of the story?

Sounds to me like the throw out bearing is getting dry. On some tractors there is a grease cert but on the 860 I don't remember if it has one or not. Someone down on the Ford board could tell you. It could be a tranny bearing, but for this old mans money if you push in the clutch or put a little pressure on the clutch, I'm betting on the throw out bearing. Teactor still has to be split to replace.
