OK boys I got a good one --a 3010 with electronic ign. -- the key switch has a built in voltage reducer -- when I turn the key on it some times activates the genny and turns the motor a bit --what is up with that --it has electronic ign. I dont think-the ign. works very good with a voltage reducer -- whats your thoughts on that -- I took the starter exciter wire off and when I turned the key on the motor turned a bit --so I knew it was the genny doing it -- but how and why -- I dont know ! confused !!

Have you taken the belt off and watched the generator?

Some electronic ignitions create a spark at the coil when turned on. Wonder if you are seeing the engine turned because of a fuel ignition in a cylinder?

In some guys' imagination a generator can "motor" with enough power to turn the engine over, at least a bit.

The trouble with that theory is that a typical generator (including the generator on a 3010) is disconnected from the battery at engine shutdown by the "cutout", or the cutout section of the voltage regulator, and turning the key switch back on after shutdown does NOT send a surge of power sufficient to turn the engine over a bit to the generator. (To be fair, a 3010 has an "idiot light" that sends a fraction of an Amp to the generator when the key is switched "ON".)

Guess if that worked we wouldn't need a big heavy starter fed with BIG cables from the battery, would we!

You guys are the best --I messed with the 3010 again this morning -- change the the switch -- so it stays running now and used a different terminal to power the coil so it stays on 12 volt all the time -- the electronic ignition doesnt like 6 volt --no wonder that thing ran so bad -- runs nice at any speed to --and it does fire on its own when you turn the key on ( just a bit and only once in a while)thanks for the insights Guys -- Roy

No Imagination

For years the Case garden tractors (442)used the generator to motor start a 12 HP engine.

Old old Kohler 4 cylinder generators came with nothing but a crank starter on them.
Yet they had a battery on them, hit the switch and the 12 volt would feed the generator and turn the engine over to start it.
I think it was called the autostart feature.

So yes it is unlikely a tractor with a generator factory wired could turn the engine over but wired right it can be done.
