Autumn Olive, Arrrg

I would love to hear how to get rid of these darn bushes. I've tried several herbicides and had no luck. The chain saw just causes them to sprout all over again at the root ball. Does anyone have a method that will kill these things and keep them from coming back in the fences and pasture.

Thank you, Greg

Not sure how many you have or how big, but I just pull them out. They don't have much of a root ball. I cleaned up a ton of them several years back. I used forks on the skidsteer, and they popped right out. Its getting to be time to do it again as they are all over the edges of the woods.

We cleared 15 acres of them a few years
back. As was said, they don't have much of
a root ball on them. The roots go shallow
and out a little ways, kind of flat. The
ones we were taking out had probably 8-10"
trunks on them, they were pretty good
sized. We used a skidsteer with forks to
pop the smaller ones out, and the front
bucket on a backhoe to remove the bigger
ones. Just get right at the base of them
and they'll slide the entire roots and all
out of the ground with minimal dirt. I've
been spraying them this year in the
woodlots we have. I have been experimenting
with just round up, with at gallon of
roundup in 50 gallons of water. Seems to be
working, all the leaves fell off. I have to
go back and hit the ones I missed or didn't
get good coverage on. Time will tell how it
works.

I hadn't thought about trying to pull them. Some of these are very large. Did the come back in the same spot that they were pulled from?

the tordon is best but garlon with 1/3 oz of escort is very good
with tordon you can not plant anything except grasses back
do not over apply becouse it has a 90 day half life.
16 oz per acre and 90 days still has 8 oz and 90 days has 4 ox

if you use roundup put a 32 oz of 24 D with it

Instead of spending time grubbing and money on chemicals spend your time and money building a good fence and then get some Kiko meat goats they'll have the Autumn Olive killed off in about
a year and you'll make good money on the goats as they out sell cattle these days.

This land is surrounded with an 8 wire high tension fence with a big charger on it. Shouldn't that keep goats in? We've never kept them.

That should keep them in no problem.A little advice if you do decide to get goats Kiko or Kiko crosses are the most trouble free you can buy,do not buy Boers they are a real pain all the way around.Dairy goats like French Alpines and Saanens would be good. They all love bushes, weeds, honeysuckle etc and will improve pasture for cattle.I run cows and goats together.

As long as you get most of the roots, and
don't just break the trunk off, they won't
come back

Crossbow, 3 qts in a 55 gallon sprayer applied in the spring at time of bloom, kills them dead, unless they are big bushes, then mechanically rip them out and kill the sprouts in the spring the next year.
