hyd pump help/identify

Hello everyone, I have a neighbor that is building a firewood processor, and is using this pump on it powered by a 371 Detroit. Anyway, this pump and engine combo came off an old bucket wheel trencher/tile machine that is probably 2 or 3 times as old as me. From looking at it, it looks like a 2 section gear pump. Or, is it just a huge 2 stage pump like on a log splitter?? He was asking me if it's adjustable for pressure, and I said I had no idea about it if it's a 2 stage type pump, but if it's just a 2 stack pump, the valve controls the pressure, as I didn't see any sort of relief on the pump. He currently has the smaller portion just looped together. It is running a 6 or 8 inch cylinder, and says it is running incredibly slow, and wondered if it could be sped up. That's why I'm wondering if it is a 2 stage pump possibly. I didnt have a lot of time to look it or his plumbing over to see how it was set up. I told him I had a place I could ask where someone might know. Thanks guys

By the way, I told him he ought not to use iron pipe for hyd pressure if it ends up being over 750 pounds or so.... he's an older fellow and "been using it for hyd line forever" lol.

If you need more pictures, I can get them

Looks like it says "Vickers Vane Pump" on it, a common type of pump. Baum Hydraulics in Omaha (or, likely many other hydraulic supply houses) should be able to look up the number (which is hard to read in your photo), and come up with "specs' for it.

That galvanized pipe will get him hurt. It is not rated for much over 100 PSI. Black iron yes not galvanized.

As for his flow issues. The pump looks like a two section gear pump. Not a two stage one. I think he has it restricted in how he has it plumbed. Even then using a 6-8 inch cylinder will be a SLOW wood splitter without a 30-40 gpm pump. I really doubt that the trencher had a very high flow pump. The heavy loads where all mechanically driven.

Yeah, he's just trying to get it to work the way he wants before putting the correct/new stuff on it is what he told me

Thanks JD, I told him he couldn't neck down the hoses so much into his control valve, that would also slow down his already slow operation even more

I would say it's a two section, single stage pump. Probably a vane. The front section is large; the rear, not so much. The main problem I see is the large section is throttle to about 1/3 capacity by those small fittings. Increase the plumbing and it should flow better, if it has any gas left in the tank...
I definitely would not go spending money on the pump if it is bad. Get a new Permco or similar gear pump...

Thanks Rod. I think that's what he's gonna have to do. I was able to navigate around, and found that JD Seller is right, that thing doesn't have much flow. By looking at the specs of that pump, even as large as it is, it is only rated at 13 gpm! Wow, no wonder it's slow lol.

I was on a job onetime. Looked at the crane they had to remove a generator off the roof. Hoses were cracked hyd leaks all over. Just as the generator got over the edge. A hose blew out. Sprayed everyone with oil. Generator dropped hit the edge of the roof. Flipped over and out of the lifting brackets. Landed on a job box rolled over onto a guys truck. Then I had to explain to the new owner. Why his 2100 dollar generator. Was now a pile of junk. Was not a happy meeting.
