neutral start switch problems JD 2750

First, let me say I have read all the archived items on neutral start switches and my problem is different from those folks whose tractors won't start. After trouble shooting a bad solenoid and having the alternator rebuilt, my tractor has been starting fine (before the alt wasn't putting out enough to charge the batteries and even with a full charge on new batteries, the solenoid just clicked) Here's the thing: I just noticed that the tractor will start in gear. I assumed bad neutral start switch and bought a new one but that did not cure the problem. This may have been going on a long time since I always (really try) never to turn the key without being in neutral, and don't resort the the shorting the solenoid on the ground trick so when I noticed it it may have had nothing to do with the problem I was fixing. Any idea how the starter is getting power with a functioning NSS in place when key is turned in gear? What to do about it, other than remembering always to put it in neutral except the time I forget?

More than likely it was taken out of the circuit (maybe because it failed) and to make it right you will need to trace down the connection between the wires going to the switch (no ide where that might be. The other possibility is that the wires are touching one another either exposed, or in a loom. If you disconnect the start terminal at the starter, one of the wires of the start switch should show volts when the key is in start position, the other one no volts. If both have volts, it was either bypassed at a connection, or touching (shorted) in a wire loom. If neither has voltage, someone likely bypassed the switch at a modestly easy to find location. They could have run a new wire directly from the switch to the starter. Jim

I have multiple larger JD tractors, and each of them have 2 neutral start switches...one on clutch, other on transmission. All were PS tractors. The only one I ever bypassed the clutch switch on was the 3020, so I could start the silage blower without getting on the tractor. Later ones were cab tractors, and I"d get into the cab to start the blower. I"ve never bypassed the transmission NSS switch on any tractor, but yes, there are two NSS switches. In your case, see if you have a transmission NSS, and see if it has been bypassed. Easy to do...just cut a short wire, crimp terminals on it, and plug it into the NSS wire plug.

Yep, SMJ, gotta agree with you, the PS's had two while the synchros or quads just had the transmission neutral switch.

1st thing I'd recommend is disconnected NS switch then determine if engine will still start by turning ign switch. If so then you will need to trace out the wiring.

You still have not stated which transmission option your tractor has. Obviously that's somewhat critical in locating your problem. I'm no Deere expert by any means, but I did work on two just in past few weeks for starting circuit problems. Both were gear drive, not powershift. Both only had one neutral switch located in the rockshaft housing just below the seat. After purchasing and studying numerous Deere technical manuals, wiring diagrams etc, what I learned was that in both cases the start signal doesn't actually pass through the neutral switch. There are two start relays between the key switch and the starter. The first is controlled by the ignition circuit through the neutral switch and is energized whenever the switch is on and the trans is in neutral. The second is powered from the key switch start position. When both relays are energized at the same time battery power is then supplied to the starter solenoid. Both relays were in or behind the dash area.

Type of trans that taem's tractor has is irrelevant as it has 1 switch(key 8 or 11) located in frt of RS housing No JD utility tractor especially the ones built between '65-'92 were optioned with a powershift trans

It starts with neutral start switch unplugged and a new switch didn't work any diffeently. What color wire should be looking for on the start switch? the wire on the NSS is so crudded up with green paint, I can't tell the color. Additionally, how do you find a wiring diagram for this tractor ?(the JD parts site doesn't seem to show me one)Thanks
