Startre soleniod

Having trouble with my Farmall 504 starting. It ran fine, parked it in the barn and next time I tried to start it the starter solenoid just clicks. Put a new Interstate battery in, no change. When I press the starter button the solenoid clicks, but doesn't turn over the engine. Could the starter be seized?

Use a jumper cable from the positive post on the battery directly to the solenoid, and a jumper from the negative post to a good ground on the starter. Sounds like a battery cable problem to me.

If you try it and the lights are on. if they dim to i/2 bright, the starter is jammed or shorted. If they stay bright, the circuit to the starter is open, or the starter is open. Hitting the starter a solid whack on the non-mount end can let it work a few more times. If it does, fix it, don't just whack it to work till it is damaged. Jim

Possibly that new battery is not fully charged, or possibly the starter drive is jammed into the ring gear of the flywheel. Get a wrench, loosen the starter mounting bolts and pull the starter out of the hole a little way. You don't need to remove it. Just pull it back a ways. Listen for a "click", and then reinstall the starter. If that is the problem, you should now be good to go.

On Delco starter solenoids over time the battery terminal bolt head wears away inside, and the contact washer will not hit both bolt heads inside when worn. Bolt has a square shoulder, try removing the battery cable and wires from that bolt. Remove the inner nut, push bolt in and turn it 1/2 turn and pull it back in place, install the nuts and wires as before. This places the unworn side of the bolt head to where the contact washer can work correctly. Have saved lots of Delco solenoids this way, may be what yours needs.

The starter jamming up with the ring gear was problem with an M I used for a couple years. Loosening the starter would "fix" it as others have posted. Check your ground cable connection. gobble

Take the starter off the tractor. Set it on the ground. Attach a jumper cable to the body flange and the opposite end to a 12v battery. Connect the other jumper to the battery. Put your foot on it very firmly. Touch the remaining jumper lead to the solenoid terminal that goes directly into the starter. If it radically spins and tries to get out from under your foot, it is probably good. If nothing you need it rebuilt or new. Jim

New battery bad or just not charged, bad wire connections or bad wire. I don't think a bad starter will make a solenoid click. Just low voltage to the solenoid and starter.

I had the starter on my M do the same thing. I thought the drive was probably jammed into the ring gear. That was not the problem. I took the starter apart and found a pile of debris from the brushes built up around the brush holdersm etc. Cleaned all that stuff out, put the starter back together, and I was back in business.

Worked on a custmers M the other day with same problem . Found that frt.bolt on bendix spring cam out and jammend agaist startr mount houseing.
