Anyone baling with a DB 990? Wondering what size baler they can handle I have one with no remotes and looking at one with remotes and would like to be able to use it on a round baler.

seen a few here running NH 850's with 990's only issue they had was when you step all the way down on the clutch to stop the pto the hyd quit too, these were pre-Case DB's not if they ever had a engine driven live hyd pump on them or not later,, they had plenty of power for the baler they were running

Any David Brown 990's that I have owned or even seen had live hydraulics as they ran off the engine not the tranny. There could have been some earlier ones that I never saw but I would not think that there were very many. As far as running a round baler, it is my belief that it would have around 55-60 horses so it is capable of running one but you would need to adjust your speed to the capacity of the baler. I did run a 5x5 baler with a DB 1200, 65 hp, and it worked OK but when I used a tractor with 80 hp it was much better.

The David Brown tractors were pretty good tractors in their day and one in good condition will still do a lot of work. Happy farming.

My Dad bought a new 990 in 1965, it had the rear hyd pump,, still in the family as my uncle bought it in 1967 and still gets used at least weekly,, love DB's, we also sold DB's when Case bought them in 1971, sold lots of them every year,, all the ones we got in had the live front pumps, but I have seen a dozen or more that do not, just stating what could be,, I was wrong on the baler he pulled with it though it was Hesston,, sorry about that I was thinking of 1975 when the NH 850 came out and I had a 990 hooked to it to pull it through the 4th of July parade lol

I'm using a DB990 for bailing right now. I'm running an ancient Hesston 5500 5x5 twine tie baler making dry hay. Or, as dry as we can get it this year. This is the first year I've had any issues pulling that baler and it's all related to the soft ground and trying to beat the rain, ie- you can definitely push a tired old tractor that really needs an overhaul too hard! In a normal year, it has no problems at all making a 5x5 bale and doing it going up and down slopes. The hydraulic pump IS driven by the tranny on my approx 1968 model. Step all the way down on the 2 stage clutch and hydraulics stop as well as the PTO. That doesn't really bother me. Others it might.

Personally, I think DB made excellent tractors. The design and engineering are definitely British, but it's not like they're made in some eastern European communist workers paradise. I'd buy a more DB's if I could. A 1410 would be the cats!
