generic gearbox replacement

I use a Lawn Genie flail mower/collection system to cut cover crop grown between the grape rows in our vineyard, and feed the green chop to the cows. Works pretty well, drops a mini round bale of cuttings and they fight over the fresh greens.

Saturday, I started down a row and heard a clunk from the mower. I shut it down right away, and the clunk stopped as the mower coasted to a stop. Today I opened up the gearbox and found three stripped teeth on one bevel gear and a host of chipped ones on the other gear.

The box is a Superior Gearbox model 221, now obsolete. No parts available from Superior, just a newer replacement gearbox, $400 and twelve week wait.

I just returned from the local bearing store, he can get bearings and seals, but not the gears. A browse through his catalogs revealed a Curtis Machine Company model 214 to be almost an exact duplicate. They want $600+ and four weeks.

Anyone have any other sources or suggestions? A pretty simple 2:1 right angle box, one inch keyed shafts.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Look at some grain auger gearboxes. They used one inch shafts. I do not know of any that are 2-1 ratio most are 1-1.

$400 is a good price for a brand new gearbox that size. Have you checked with any Lawn Genie dealers or the factory? They may have a gearbox in stock or on a used machine on a dealer's lot somewhere. Be prepared for a higher price though.

This would be a good time to diagnose why the gearbox failed so it won't be repeated. Maybe also check and re-calibrate any slip clutches on the machine. A rusted-solid slip clutch will not protect a drive train from any shock loads.

Thanks for the tip on Surplus Center, it just added another link to my bookmarks and cost me an hour looking at the huge array of stuff they have!! Will definitely come in handy in the future. Unfortunately, not with this gearbox- no 2:1 ratios :(

The M-C company that made the Lawn Genie now specializes in grain systems- bins and augers, etc. No mention of the old lawn equipment on their site and they have yet to reply to my question.

All those on the Surplus Center site were $150 to $200 and the right sizes, just wrong ratio, Was hoping to pay about that price, and did not really want to wait three months for it....

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the eBay number. I spent a couple hours on there after creating this thread, and found another post by the same guy for a similar box. I have never done the "Make Offer" purchase on eBay, always seems like a scam of some sort, sell it or don't.

Shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement. I suspect one manufacturer makes gearboxes for a lot of brands.

Back in the early '80's, I was Buildings and Grounds Supervisor for a local public school district. We had a Ford 7', two bladed finish mower we ran behind a 971 Ford tractor. Both blades on the mower were belted off of one gearbox. An old timer that worked for me told me the gearbox on that mower was the same as a 90 degree belt pulley that was mounted on the PTO of N series Ford tractors.
