3rd hay cutting not so smooth

Started cutting hay Thursday afternoons it's Oliver 88, got 1.5 rounds and awful noise and PTO stopped. Got PTO disengaged and noise didn't stop. No hydraulics either. Pretty well had it diagnosed at that point but I pulled the PTO housing off anyway and could turn the PTO clutch by hand. Must had wore the splines off or brok shaft. Went to borrow a tractor from a friend but by the time I got hooked up was too late and dew was coming on. Finished mowing Friday at my house and friend that I borrowed tractor from. Raked Sunday starting about noon, raked at friends house. Baked mine up no problems and went to friends to bale there. Must have picked something up in right front tire when raking there because it was sitting on the rim. Went and got his portable air compressor in yard cart behind mower. Half way to tractor sounded like a hose burst but come to find the drain valve broke off. By this time it's 6:30 and farm store was closed and only big chain auto parts stores open. First one looked at my like I had two heads when I asked for 1/4" quarter turn valve. Second one couldn't get anyone to help me but found a 1/4" radiator drain valve. Back to air compressor, new valve in and fill tire. Hook baler and hay rack thinking hay had picked up too much moisture. Made 5 bales and pulled back to barn. We'll finish tomorrow.

(quoted from post at 04:42:40 07/31/17) Good reason to have a spare tractor around, you can literally pay for an old tractor in one afternoon saving some quality hay.

88 was my spare, lol. 1650 is either stuck in two gears or input shaft of transmission locked up tight. Haven't had time to mess with it.

Used 77 for raking and baling but hydraulic pump on it is shot.

Probably the long PTO shaft has taken the splines off up in the hub in the flywheel. My 1850 did it three times before I changed the hub too. The 1550 did it once. In fact, that was the first one that it happened to on me.

ding ding ding, we have a winner!

got the new shaft ordered $214. Hub is $167 I think. Going to replace PTO shaft seals while I have it apart.

I never did put a new hub in the 1550. I had it apart a few years ago and put a new clutch in it,but when I stuck the shaft in with it all apart there wasn't enough wear to say so.

If the hub was in bad shape I would have expected that the splines in the shaft not be wore off all the way to the minor (root) diameter.

Ya,it's best to change it. You can do it on that 88 without even pulling the motor. I believe I would. The Hydra Power is in the way on the 1550,so the motor has to come out.
