got an old 8n found it had bad head gasket repaired and fired up so to speak bought a new carb from after market new points, plugs cap, rotor and gasket on manifold . now I can start it holding choke it will keep on running but the second I let off choke it dies so I can't adjust any idle screws my question is do you think I maybe got a bad carb not sure of wear it came from got it from Amazon Thanks for any help

I don't think the idle screw adjustment is causing your problem. Does the carb have an adjustable power valve? If that's turned in too lean, it can cause symptoms like yours.

I have always turned the main carb
adjustment all the way in till it
bottoms out, then back off two full
turns. The idle screw then I bottom it
out and then turn back out one full turn
and then I tweak one or both if
necessary

If that carb is a M/S TSX241 such idle screw is up by the manifold and you turn it out from bottom to 1/5 turns. The main jet which is lower and sits at an angle you turn it out 2 full turns.

Also check that you have a good blue/white spark at all 4 plug wires that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
Then check that you have a good steady flow of gas out for the carb drain plug that will fill a pint jar in under 3 minutes

Probably lack of fuel from the tank- as Old said, take the drain plug out of the carb and make sure you've got a steady flow. I've fussed around with carbs in the past, and just ended up spending unnecessary money.

I have all the above good fuel and lots of spark but I just read elsewhere on this site that the aluminum after market carbs are not all that so now im not sure what to do but thanks for quick responses
