Saw this overturned yesterday

Kind of falls in line with "drivers today". It's appalling whats on the road today in regard to drivers without an ounce of respect for anyone.

On the way to the job site yesterday morning, I came across another tractor trailer diagonally across a 2 lane road in a kind of a blind area. Broke down, but why across the road like that, have a few ideas, but what a thing to run up on without expecting it. Our tandem boom truck was not far behind me, but he can see further being up higher.

On the way out heading back to the office on 209 north of Ellenville, a young man in a red F350 just crosses the center lane, and narrowly and I mean narrowly avoids a head on with a fully loaded dump truck. Playing with his phone. I pulled over to the shoulder expecting the collision being right behind him. There was a tractor trailer behind me.

It's not you, it's definitely the other guy. The story in the attached link, I would have hit the car without hesitation and unfortunately a long time ago, did exactly that. Driver lived, rig did not get destroyed, scratched bumper is all.
Roll Over

Beautiful stretch of country. Road my bike up that way, up to Big Indian, then over the hill and back down to Monticello. Went past two reservoirs. Rt 97 along the Delaware is nice too.

Good friend of mine. Lost his son to a guy playing with his phone. Of course the other guy lived. But know facing murder charges. But he doesn't see what he did wrong. One life destroyed by an idiot that just had to play with his phone.

It's out of control and people just don't get it. I remember your post about the young man, hard to forget a tragedy like that. I just could not believe seeing this red pick-up cross over the double yellow line and then recover at the last second. The dump truck either committed to the head on or just did not see him until too late because there was no reaction, it was going to happen, the pick-up truck driver got lucky avoided it. He turned off on another road a mile up and was fooling with something again or never stopped doing so, as if that close call was nothing. There have been horrific fatal accidents caused by this problem locally, and its not going to stop until people wake up and put these smart phones down while driving. There is no need for any of it.

It's symptomatic of the collapse of the country.

Our country is collapsing into chaos at light speed.

I've been a student of history for over 50 years and am a big picture person. Those who are not cannot see things from a historical perspective so cannot see the big picture.

It took the Romans (Western) centuries to collapse, the Byzantines even more centuries. We are doing it in a generation (or 2).

One wonders what future historians will write about the collapse of western civilization, especially, the United States....

The parents are still having problems with it. I tried to stop by and talk with them. But his brother told me it was not a good time. They have cut themselves off from the world. Doc said it may take some time.

There has to be a way to shut down phones in vehicles. We got along fine without them before.I had one because company required it. Don't have one now and never will.

Dean, I have been saying the same thing for some time now, but people seem to think I am nuts (maybe so!!) and don't take me seriously.

yesterday as i was going to monroe wi i left stop sign going onto il rt 26
from out of nowhere came some jerk in a pos car right on my rear i slowed down to let him pass he followed me for 2 or 3
miles he finally passed me waving honking his horn then flipped me off. i was half a block behind him and he ran the red light.
people like that should not be allowed to anything more powerful than a bike.
a place waiting for a wreck to happen of course he would have no clue as to how it happened.

A company I drove for years ago always told the drivers to at least get a piece of the other vehicle that caused the situation, and do not try to miss it at the expense of wrecking yourself while the other guy drives off laughing. I have always believed that and follow it to this day. The idiot that caused it should always be taken out.

i lost close friend three years ago, you gal on cell phone ran right into back of tractor throwing him off the running over, then she still left seen. left wife and three kids. she still has her days yet . kids have pretty well handled it other than the girl got off free.

Some say similar things about me too, hermit. Mostly, I keep my opinions to myself.

Stay tuned. In historical perspective, it's happening at light speed.

Most smart phones have GPS, they know where they are and if their moving. It would be a simple no cost software change to disable everything except 911 service if the phone is moving. I have suggested this change on another site, but the phone addicts are immediately ready to lynch me for suggesting they should lose the use of that phone in a moving rig while driving. They say, HOW DARE you say I cant fool with my cell phone while driving, and how can I suggest taking this RIGHT away from the passengers too!!!!! I said, do what you did before cell phones, IF anything is so important that you must use a phone, pull over, park, make your call then get back on the road.
No politician would dare try to enact legislation banning cell phone use in a moving rig, the phone addict backlash would be deadly for him.

I drive with a camera attached to windshield. Everyday I notice drivers coming toward me drifting across the line. Adjusting radio, reading-sending text?

Not to give semis a bad rap, but they are making the news almost daily. Most recent two killed on Illinois 50. News reported semi driver tested positive for drugs and was arrested.
2 killed

Drive I-80 a lot-everyday come upon several 18 wheelers weaving between rumble bars and across white line, drive up beside, texting or on phone or garmin-not just cars that cause problems!

It surprised me to learn that speeding causes about the same number of fatalities and drunk drivers. Here is a clip from NTSB.

The NTSB found the relationship between speed and crash involvement is complex and is affected by a number of factors, however, speed ? and therefore speeding ? increases crash risk both in terms of the likelihood of being involved in a crash and in terms of the severity of injuries sustained by those involved in speeding-related crashes.

The study links speeding to 112,580 passenger vehicle highway crash fatalities between 2005-2014. To put that number in perspective, nearly the same number of people ? 112,948 ? died in alcohol-involved crashes in the same period.

Despite this sobering statistic, speeding has few negative social consequences compared to the consequences of an arrest or conviction for driving under the influence. The study further notes that although drivers are aware that speeding is a threat to safety, they also acknowledge it is a common driving behavior in the US.

Here is an article saying cell phones are responsible for 1 in 20 accidents.

Harvard researchers estimate about one in 20 U.S. traffic accidents involve a driver talking on a cell phone, but say laws banning cellular phone use while driving would cost society about as much as it would save.
"We calculate that around 2,600 people die each year as a result of this use of the technology," said researcher Joshua Cohen of the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis. Another 330,000 are believed injured.

I had a car come a good twenty inches over the line towards me today. I just moved over a little. I could see that his head was down.

Billy. The phones are not the problem. The PEOPLE are.
Every time there is an incident like this, we get the "simple" solutions. The old "blame the gun" syndrome. If it were not the phone, then it might be fooling with the stereo/CD player, a GPS, or even a ham sandwich. Either way, it is th3e DRIVER that is not behaving responsibly that is the problem. Not the phone.
