I think you mean a lean-to. I did this on a metal sided barn at my other place. I nailed and bolted a 2x6 (or 2x8, can't remember the size) to the poles and girts, right through the metal, just under the eave of the barn then used joist hangers to put the joists for the lean-to on that piece, then metal roofing over that. It's still there after 20 years. The end attached to the barn is essentially covered so there's no rain getting in behind it and running down the wall.

I think if you are attaching it to an exposed area you'd have to cut the siding and so the attachment is behind and under the siding and probably need flashing to route water onto the lean-to roof. If attaching as an extension of the existing roof line I'd take any trim off, if the eaves are enclosed, or just extend the roof rafter, depending on how the roof is framed.

Good luck with it!

W_B has great information. I will add that theload on the Girt attached to the building needs to be fastened with lag bolts (two per contact point) if the Girt is on 24" or 16"
centers. If on 4' centers, I would use a 2X12 for the girt and 3 lags. The lag bolts should be at least 2.5 inches into the support, and have flat washers under the heads. Joist
hangers are available with a built in pitch matching the roof pitch of the lean too. Snow load factors and engineering of the rafters are important and need to be done by an
engineer or builder that would sign off on the plan!!! I recommend no less than a 2:12 pitch on a standing seam or corrigated metal roof, and no less than 3:12 on shingles if they
are 1/2 spaced. Jim

That was pretty much what I was thinking but I was not sure if I should cut away part of the metal before I bolted on the 2x8. Thanks Guys.

Please, please, please repost your final decision with pictures. I'm debating doing the same to the end of my building. Its a 30 ft run and being on the end, is gabled. I can't decide whether it will be fine to simply scab on the roof of the lean to or whether I should cut into the existing wall metal so I can lap flashing up under it to transition onto the new roof. I'm curious where you land on this.

I talk to a contractor today and he said that I would need for rafters 2x12 on a 16 foot span. To me that sounds like a little over kill. He said that I should use trusses. What do you think.
