My head is bowed in shame. I thought I knew how to fix small engines. How can I test a coil of a 5 hp older Briggs & Stratton engine. Put new add on so called chip. Sure is wired correctly. I have one of the cols in the house with Harbor Freights free tester. I can check DC and AC voltage , however the squiggley lines like a horseshoe are foreign to me. Help please???????????

wilson.......squiggly lines? Thats the GREEK LETTER "OHMEGGA". Shortened to Ohms, unit of resistance. The more resistance, the LESS the amps. Litebulbs have RESISTANCE, more volts the BRIGHTER the LITE. All metal has RESISTANCE. Tungsten alot, copper just a little. And then you have the magic semi-conductor used in transistors and integrated circuits........HTH, electrical Dell

Is it just a Briggs coil used with points ignition, or is it a Magneton with no points? Different methods of checking are used depending which.

Bottom left area, 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock has five ohm-scale settings. 200, 2000, 20K, 200K, and 2000K. Put it on 20K and then check between the spark-plug output area of the coil and the small primary on the coil that would go to the points. It should read around 7000 to 12,000 ohms. Now switch to the low ohm scale marked "200." Check between that primary wire and to ground. Should read just a few ohms.

If you stuck something like an Atom or Omega chip on there and get no spark, just reverse the connections. Often that is the problem.

Hey Neighbor, some old small engines used a battery powered coil points ignition similar to a tractor, others had a coil that was mounted up against the flywheel and Ive had luck fixing some of them simply by cleaning and wire brushing the magnets on the flywheel and adjusting the air gap if needed. Many (not all) small engine coils may have a low voltage primary resistance of less then one up to a few ohms and ohms measurements on a typical volt ohm meter are the horseshoe looking symbol and use the low ohms scale maybe 20 or 200 etc whatever the meter has for the LV primary continuity and resistance check. NOTE often a coil can pass low energy low voltage continuity and resistance checks but still fail at high voltage and once warmed up. A meter can show if its definitely BAD like an open winding but it dont necessarily show you its completely good. Remove the plug wire and let your wife hold it while you give it a spin NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

PS I'm looking into your latest legal project and will call you early next week
