So I was planning an going to go buy a tractor today but there was a problem. The guy sold it. I told him that I was coming down this morning with cash the truck and the trailer. He told me yesterday that that was great and it would be there when I got there because I told him not to sell it. So then he tells me later that night that he sold earlier that day after he promised me he wouldn't. So my help to you guys is when something is for sale go and look at it right away because otherwise this might happen. It happened to me twice.

Sellers should adhere to "no saves". Buyer should be prepared to make the deal (truck and trailer or have hauling arrangements ready)and its probably a wise decision to not tell anyone you are bringing cash ahead of time in case they are criminals setting you up for robbery or worse.

Best thing a buyer can do is pay the seller, get a bill of sale/receipt, load the darned thing up immediately then leave. Once you find something and are inclined to buy, unless there is something discovered that would change your mind, follow through and be done with it. I've bought things knowing there were other buyers right behind me that would offer more and the seller realized they listed it lower than they should have. Walk away stating you'll be back the next day is a mistake, that seller is not obligated to sell you anything and could easily take another offer in your absence.

The only fault I can see is the fellow telling you he would hold the tractor and him not doing that. I can understand the seller taking the first money in hand over a coming later and getting it BUT he should have told you that up front.

I rarely will hold some thing anymore. I have been burnt too many time but guys never showing up. So the majority of the time it is who lays the cash in my hand first gets the item. I state it that way too.

Happened to me a year or so ago. When I got there, the owner of it wasn't there either. His brother was. He said "Ya,he said he had two guys coming. He wondered which one would get here first". Like it was some kind of joke or something.

I tend to do things a bit different. If I believe the caller is serious: I will hold item a specified time. Giving time for payment or buyer with payment to arrive. Later callers put on a call back list. If first in line backs out our does not show at the given time: next in line gets called and offered. My work limits when I can go look at or buy an item: others are no doubt restricted as well. That is how I like to be treated as buyer: how I operate as seller.

I feel your pain, about 8 years ago I called about tractor, it was 1 hour away from me, told the owner I was on my way with cash, be there in one hour or less, did have to stop for fuel half way there but still made it on time, turned down the guys road and see tractor coming out from behind the house headed to the road, I thought everything was perfectly in sync, well I was dead wrong, as I'm parking in front of the man's house I see the tractor being loaded on another guys trailer, the owner sold it to a guy that said he could get there before me, I was ready to open a can of whoop @$&, I would never do anyone like that, when I have something for sale I hold it till the person shows up and tell other interested parties that it's sold.....

I never have that problem probably because I usually pay too much for something nobody else wants or over look a flaw that others noticed and decided to pass.

Well it stinks but move on this stuff seems to be common place today. I too feel he should have given you an amount of time to get there and say yes or know.

Yep at one time years ago a mans word was his bond but not any more. Now days if some one shows up with the cash in hand even if promised to some one else most will sell it right out form under a guy. Last one O got last summer I asked the guy if he would hold it till tomorrow since it was around 8PM. He said he would and I told him hey if you want I will come right over and give you a deposit to make sure it is mine and he told me it was mine and the next day I stop to see him gave him $100 and told him I'd be back in an hour or so with the rest and he said ok it is now my rake tractor. Only payed $300 for it and winched it on the trailer and drove it off

If its a bargain you need to hit the road immediately and have cash in hand.I even bought a tractor once another guy was test driving because the ad read "First person to give me cash owns the tractor".I pulled up saw the tractor was OK asked the guy if it was still for sale he said yes no one had given him any money.I handed him the cash and the fellow test driving it wasn't real happy but hey that's what the ad said. All is fair in love, war and CL.Or he who hesitates don't get the bargain.

I saw an ad in a farm paper for a tractor that was underpriced- called the guy, he said someone's coming about 10 AM tomorrow to look, you could come then, too. He was 4 hours away, but I got up at 0 dark 30 and made sure I was there by 9:30. I had it bought and putting it on the trailer by 10, when the other guy showed up. I was a ways down the road when he got to the farmhouse, so don't know what was said or whether any promises had been made- I assume not, as he didn't yell at me or flip me off on his way out. I used the tractor (IH 674) for 2 years, then sold it for a 50% profit.

I don't see how some folks can make a problem out of this.

Coupla times I had something sold before I got there, I figured it was my fault for not getting there sooner.

And when I sell something, the first person to put money on the table has it. I once had three guys show up within a few minutes of each other to look at a pickup I had for sale. They decided among themselves that the first one there should have first chance. He bought it without even haggling over the price.

Now the "rest of the story". It was a 4X4 Chevy pickup. It snowed several inches the day before. The guy that bought it had a 2wd pickup and his wife had slid off the road and got stuck the evening before. I think when the poor guy left home that morning, he had orders not to come home without a 4X4 pickup.

As a seller, the first guy with the right cash take it home. I might hold an item for someone I know well and trust, but not for someone I've never met and only talked to briefly on the phone or in an email. I've been burned too many times. As a buyer I don't expect any special consideration from a stranger or from a friend.

See that is the thing at the time the guy never put any money down on the table and I was going to until he said that he had a guy that wasn't sure if he was going to buy it or not although I was. So he basically told me that I couldn't buy it. But it doesn't bother me because there are others out there.

I both buy and sell on Craigslist and so far have had no problems. I will hold something for one day for someone if they ask. Anyone else that calls I take there number and call them back. I have had plenty of no shows but usually I can tell by talking to someone if they are really serious or not. I have had people hold something for me as well but I try to limit it to one day and always talk to seller before leaving to get it. I wanted an item this spring but was to busy to go get it and after talking to them I just mailed a check. Makes you a little nervous but most people selling farm items are good to work with. Not sure I would do it with vehicles or tools. Keep looking you will find what you want. Tom

when I bought my 450 on Craigslist I talked to the guy on the phone told him I was on my way to look at it. I drove 2 hours one way, in a car, and after looking at the tractor and driving it decided I wanted it. The seller and I discussed the price and came to an agreement and we shook hands on it but I told him it would be a week before I could come get it. He said that was fine but I said I wanted to leave him some money to hold it. I think I gave him $300 to hold it and he promised to take the ad off of Craigslist that night. He did, later I went and picked up the tractor. If I hadn't put money down on the tractor I don't think he would have taken it off CL.
I've been burned as a buyer and a seller; I try to put some money down if I want it. But I've had stuff sold out from under me. I've sat at home waiting for a what my dad called bebackers.
So it goes.

When money changes hands you have a deal, nothing shows bonafide interest like a cash deposit. Its too easy for someone to be interested and wanting it - but can't/won't commit because they don't have anything invested. "Bebackers" is an excellent term. Usually they don't have the money to start with or they found it cheaper somewhere else.

People complain "They didn't take my word" when dealing with a stranger - what makes your word better than anyone else's when all they have is a voice over the phone. When talking to people like that I end the conversation with "Call me before you head out in case I sell it". Because even if you are headed out and you intend to buy it - you may get there and decide = no this isn't what I was expecting.

I have had pretty good luck with buying off of craigslist. The ones I look for are the ones that are out in the middle of nowhere. They don't get too much interest in what they are selling because of where they are, and you can get a good deal.
