Another Which is worse?

If you had checked the county of origin in the store, would you still have bought it or would you have left it there?

I can't think of any thing that has come from China that was good,,or even sort of good...just saying..

Remember when "Made in Japan" was considered the 'junk'?

Nowadays, you hardly see anything with 'Made in Japan". I like to look for stuff that says "Made in Occupied Japan" though or "Made in Japan" printed with red letters.

I've often wondered ........ what the heck do they make in Japan any more. Lots of Japanese names on electronic, automotive, and all other kinds of products but not made there any more. I think they make a lot of BIG heavy equipment, ships, all kinds of that huge stuff but no more little stuff. I wonder what happened ????

Greg, I do remember! I also remember my uncle who was an engineer for Ford Motor Co, came back from Japan in about 1962 and told my cousin and I "They're making bearings like jewels in Japan!". We were both shocked as the conventional wisdom was as you said, they made cheap junky stuff.

It's become one of those issues that has no real answer.

People are people, doesn't matter where they live or work.

They build what they are told to build. Some do a good job, some don't.

It's up to the organization that initiates the manufacture of the part. If they want to cut corners, go with the lowest bid, don't mind ruining their reputation, then they can supply substandard parts, charge whatever they want, let the market decide how long they will stay in business.

On the other hand, they can set high standards, require all the certifications that the proper materials are used, maintain strict quality requirements, maintain their reputation, and present a quality product. Then hope the public will recognize their efforts, and pay the extra cost to own a quality product.

The same thing applies to USA made products. There is no shortage of substandard products made here either. At the same time there are plenty of reputable companies. The problem is the difference in manufacturing costs. Higher standards of living, government restrictions, taxes... The costs add up!

Crazy Horse- "I think they make a lot of BIG heavy equipment, ships, all kinds of that huge stuff but no more little stuff. I wonder what happened ????".

They 'Offshore' it, just like we do.

It's a race to the bottom.

Either one will immediately have me questioning why it cost so much, and thinking, "This POS better hold up" I hold them in about the same regard. They are both capable of making decent stuff, they just choose not too. Keep in mind, it's mostly American companies making stuff in China and Mexico. They're the ones that dictate the quality of said product and they make that decision based on what they think consumers are willing to spend on said product.

Made in USA, alarming? I manufacture tools and parts on cam driven and CNC machines. Very proud of the work I do. What is alarming about that?

In the last few years the only thing I've bought "Made in USA" that didn't malfunction was a metal trash can. I guess with no moving parts or electronics in it they could do it.

China, Taiwan, Mexico, India, Pakistan, Vietnam...I've even got cheapie stuff from Spain, Israel, Honduras and a few others I can't recall. 40 years Japan was the home of "cheap stuff". Now it's elsewhere. We priced our selves out of being able to compete on price. So what else do people expect.

FWIW- the quality of Chinese goods appears to be improving in some areas.

YEp, just wait till they do get the 15 an hour minimum wage passed.........it will really go downhill from there.

Not to worry Rick. It will all be okay. We'll just take everything the top 10% have to fund things. Of course that won't be near enough, so we'll have to take everything the top 20% has...which still won't be enough, so we'll try the top 50% and see if that works. Of course, we won't touch the wealth of the politicians writing the laws that allow "us" to take what others have!
