OT scammers

Scammers have been busy lately. I got a call today with a computer generated voice, which had a lot of static on it. They obviously weren't very familiar with the English language. It said "You have failed to pay your tax properly. If you do not call this number XXX XXXX within 24 hours, we will send the coach after you and put you in jail."

I got an email the other day, something about my Apple account, thanking me for my purchase.

The "purchase" was for some "Barrel of Monkeys" game download for $56,34. That's right, $56,34, not $56.34.

Then of course there was a blue link "Click here to cancel purchase".

It was good enough to get my attention though, but a quick rereading found several clues that this was not legit. Besides, never got a receipt without my name or invoice number, and a link to cancel!

I've had two calls here lately, one on my cell, and the other on the home phone, telling me the IRS wanted to lock me up. I really started to call the one on the home phone back and mess around with them a little bit, but I was in a hurry and just hit delete instead.

We (wife and I) never answer any call from a number we don't recognize. Since most do not leave a message we assume they are scammers. Caller ID is great!

sounds like an attempt to get you to 'click' on anything, so they can get a good address !

As I've said before, you cannot always assume that clicking on those links "simply" gives them a viable email address. More and more, these links are sending people to a web page that may very well be quite interesting. However, as it's on THEIR server, and you've clicked THEIR link, then unless you have your PC locked down fairly well, they can gain access to much of your system. If you have no PC security, then they can literally download everything they want while you're there, then they can go through later for any detailed information, like banking info, online sales records, personal/business contacts, etc.
