Neighbour's petitioned to have a new municipal drain in his farm downstream from ours. About 10 landowners are involved in this $800,000 project, us included. While only about 500 feet will actually cross our farm, I get assessed a ' surface water benefit' cost to the tune of well into the 5 figure bracket ,even though our existing municipal outlets on our farm. Same thing happened last year on our other farm. Oh well, as they say, good fences, and good drains makes for good neighbour's. Ben

Some pretty impressive machinery used to get the job done.

I got touched up for 8 grand for a drain clean out ,two years ago , onthe one farm . My other farm the water goes into a different water shed. The drain that I got to pay for is three miles away from my farm , bt they claim the water off my farm would eventually go through this ditch. Not sure about my water going into te ditch , but it sure took my money into the ditch.
And the part that burns my butt is , I paid more for a good farm that was on high ground , and some butt head can buy some crappy low wet pasture land , and want to have it drained and turned into crop land. Well guess what ? This year we have had so much rain , there isn't enough drains in this world to help those chumps. Some of that land was too wet to plant anything on , and what did get planted , has been under water too many times to be worth a hoot.
Yes I am still mad about paying to drain some one else's farm .

Don't you just love it when your town tells you to do something, and there's nothing you can do about it. I divided one acre into two parcels. The city made me pave the road fronting the property. Around 70K. And they will not even maintain the road, I am responsible for it for ever. I will never have to do anything, as it will last well beyond me. Stan

That's quite a trencher! Is the trench box pulled by the trencher, or is it picked and set with the trackhoe?

The Tile Drainage Act has its good points, but it has led to the farming of some land that would have been better left as pasture. On the other side of that though is the fact that we keep losing good land to housing all the time.
We farm differently too these days.....every thing is time sensitive so we need the water drained NOW. In order for that to happen the mains end up being bigger in size and number.
