Radiator Installation Questions

Hi All,

I have a 1938 Farmall F-20 that I am getting ready to replace the radiator core on. I have already purchased the new radiator core which came with the top and bottom tank gaskets from Rice in PA.

My question is primarily, is there anything special that needs to be/should be done to the radiator ahead of time? Do most people prime/paint them or leave them natural? Are any sealants needed or should the gaskets work just fine on their own? Any other advice?

Also, any advice on how to get the old radiator completely out of the tractor? I am rebuilding a spare that the metal is in better condition, but the tractor still has the sheet metal plate that goes between the radiator and the bolster. When I rebuilt the engine this past winter I could only shift it a little, not enough to get it all the way out.

Thanks,

I have done the same with generator radiators. I left them unpainted on the coils. For the gaskets. I always used a little sealer on the gaskets. Indian Head is what I used. Didn't want to put 200 gallons of coolant in. Only to have it leak.

I agree, a little sealer on them will help. I did my dads ZA MM this spring. Had to clean the radiator out as it was a used replacement core so I removed both the top and bottom tanks. Made the gaskets myself. One thing to remember is not to over tighten the bolts when snugging them up and to be as even as possible. I rechecked them after I warmed it up.

Thank you! I believe that is what I will do then. I think I still have some Indian Head left from when I rebuilt the engine anyways. Probably will grind and prime the inside of the tanks too to help prevent more rust. Thanks again.

Thank you! You were lucky to be able to find a good used one, I'd imagine a lot cheaper than a new one like I had to get. And I will make sure to remember that. Thanks again.
