Cattle In The Summer

Cattle are looking good now they have lost their winter coats and all shiny. The green grass is hanging on despite the lack of rain. Glad I don't have a big herd though. Some video from yesterday morning as I gave them some chopped oats.
Cows in summer

i learned a long time ago when i want my cows in the yard i put some all stock feed in the bunk and start yelling for them.
that works really well if they go for a walk(get out).
some young people came to look at some calves they asked about going out in pasture to look at them i said no i'll get them to come to us.
they were surprised to see how well that worked.

(quoted from post at 07:58:26 07/11/17) Too bad they're not worth more!
I have not been watching cattle prices lately but I was pretty happy with the price I got for some yearlings back in March. I'll never get rich on this little herd but it helps pay for baler twine and diesel fuel.

(quoted from post at 10:16:13 07/11/17) Great pictures. Since the cattle are so tame, why not spray them with some fly spray mixed up in a hand sprayer.
They are pretty quiet but anytime I try something like that they get a bit spooked. I did pour on some Ivermectin this spring mainly for warble flies.

Good looking cattle. Have you thought about using a rag soaked in fly spray and rub it on the cattle like you are with your glove? I battle the flies also.

When we were kids it was our job in the evenings to light the "smudge" to give the cows some relief from mosquitos. A pile of old rotting straw bales or manure would smoulder away and create a nice cloud of smoke for the cattle to stand in on a quiet evening.

Nice. 33lb. Fly Blocks work very well here when bovines are deprived of other sources of salt. It runs 21% as I recall in the block and works really well for free roaming herds that aren't adjacent to unprotected neighbor's neglected animals. TSC and other places carry them.

Other thing that works is the back rubber that TSC and lots of other places sell. Insecticides are specially made for it which they market.. Hang it in a raceway or some place they frequent; have hung it between 2 trees where cows frequent in the summer for cooling shade.

They like getting their backs rubbed. Also use a pour on wormer (generic Ivomec) which gives you about 60 days of fly control to go along with the intended purpose. Have tried sulphur salt blocks but not very effective.

We ran out of hay and had to turn out a month earlier than we Normally do . Got stuck had to leave the trailer
