$895 to reseal an injection pump?

Recently sent in the Bosch injection pump off my IH 1420 combine. It had a leak from the back end area.

Got it back today, after about a week. And was surprised the bill was $895.

Looking at the bill details, it appears that about $100 was the seal kit, the rest was labor (?)

I'm thinking: YIKES!!!

Did I get overcharged?

I need to have that done on my little 2600 Ford.......I was hoping for about half what you were charged!

Ah but was that just doing the seals or was it a rebuild?? I had an injector pump off an A/C XT190 rebuilt and it cost me around that and that was probably around 10 years ago

The seal kit is about right from some that I have bought. The labor would depend on how hard it is to remove and replace. I have done some where the pump was off in about 30-45 minutes. Then I have had some where it was an hour or more.

Just re-sealing it, as far as I can tell from the bill. Probably did a bench test. But it wasn't a complete rebuild.

Your 2600 will be about 1/2 of that 895.00 cause I spent 420.00 Friday for one off 4500. That was seal kit and calbraite and labor.

I pay $20-$40 for seal kits from Italy. Many pump shops will not just reseal a pump. Price likely includes mounting on the test-stand and checking timing and delivery. If not, then you got ripped off as I see it.

I already had the pump off. Took it to my local CaseIH dealer. They don't do injection pump repairs themselves. It gets forwarded to a shop that does this stuff for them.

I'm thinking about complaining that the cost is quite high. If it does any good.....

By your later posts is seems you sent it through your local dealer. They put a markup on the cost from the repair shop. You should have taken it to the shop yourself.

Then I would say you got ripped. They shouldn't charge labor if they didn't do anything. Except a small handling charge.

I called the place they sent it to. Without telling them who I was, I asked what they charged to reseal and test a pump like the one I've got. They said about $450-$500.

So apparently my implement dealer tacked-on about $300. Just for packaging it in a box and shipping it.

I'm going to confront them about this tomorrow. I've bought a lot of parts from this IH dealer over the years. I know companies have to make a profit. But this is downright unethical.

Yeah--I know people on here are saying I "should have done this" and "should have done that". But it's disgraceful for a dealer to take advantage of a customer like me, in this fashion. Especially after all the business I've done with them over the years. That's the thing that hurts me the most.

What I am getting here is that you had an itemized bill. Was that a bill from the pump shop or the IH dealer? I'm guessing the dealer rewrote the bill. Sounds like the place I worked at when new owners took over. They should have only charged a handling fee added to pump shop bill from my perspective as they did provide that service for you. Would be interesting to know the pump shops hourly rate also.

I guess my story here needs to be a warning to others.

Yes--I suppose I should have checked better, rather than walking into it eyes wide shut. I'm 62 and been farming all my life. And when I was growing up, people like me had an inherent trust of others in the ag business. You always assumed that your local implement dealer, feed store, etc. would always "do the right thing".

Looks like the ethics I always assumed in farming has slipped away over the horizon. Silently, without me noticing it.

It's now been replaced by a ruthless, bottom-line mentality. Apparently.

Only got myself to blame for this. Yes--I know others will probably say I was na?ve. But I can't help the way I was brought up.

Complete rebuild for my ford backhoe pump, 550. I always ask the price first and most times get three bids and tell them that I'm going to do that.

My experience with 'bids' is that you are negligent if you don't get several. Some times the prices are two to one, being careful that you are comparing apples to apples. If comparing apples to oranges they may be 10 to 1.

If they had the pump shipped via Fedex overnight, it would run about $100 each way. Plus packaging materials and time for the shop monkey to box it up, and a little for the dealer to keep the lights on so you could bring the pump in to them.

That would pretty much eat up the better part of $300.

I've had a couple bad experiences with the Roose Master on my 801. The last time I took it to a diesel dealer I ask for an exchange and was told they did not exchange, but when he called a week later he gave me a different pump and charged $680.00. I now have too much black smoke which may not be the pump but I think I got a bad deal.
Who can tell me where an honest pump shop is without going through a middle man?

TN old man

About 12 years ago my 1420 IH wouldnt idle down and smoked lots under a heavy load..
I took the pump off myself and took it 70 miles to a diesel shop..They checked it out,
recalibrated it,and resealed it...The fuel screw had been bottomed out on it..The bill was $600..
I still have the D-358 with pump and would sell it for $1,000.

yep I think you got taken. Probably sent it out had it done and then doubled the bill. Just had a roosa master redone new cage seals ect. $450 with shipping.
