I haven a Carter 0-653 carburetor on my 1951 C hard to start / is the Zenith carburetor any better .

Thanks

idle circuit mite be plugged. Hows timimg and plugs batt up to snuff and same with starter and cables these things are all important to have good starts. I have a couple of Carters and they start just fine

Describe hard to start??? Those engines start very easy when in shape. Good compression? Points & plugs changed recently? Fresh gas?

fresh gas, new plugs and wire last summer, sat all winter started on first try.. last 3 weeks hard start gas running thur carb when fuel is on ...going to rebuild carb

Carter and Zenith ARE NOT the same. Zenith is MUCH better. If the Carter is giving trouble, don't even try to fix it. Toss it on the scrap pile and find a Zenith.

If it was running good, but now flooding, it may just have trash in the float valve.

Sometimes you can turn the gas off, drain the bowl to drop the float, turn the fuel back on and "maybe" it will flush the trash out.

Or ease it apart, clean the needle/seat, check the float level, check the float buoyancy. Might get by without a complete overhaul.

Yes there is one Carter that does look the same except for the choke lever isnt on the outside like a Zenith. I have two carters on a B and another on an A they both start and run just fine but i do rebuild myself. The one i havent done anything since buying tractor 10yrs ago and cultivate garden with it rest of the yr it sets in the shed.

My Super C was always too rich and fouled plugs and might drip gas once a month or 6 months/ had apart many, many times with same results. Bought a new Zenith from everybody's buddy, Denny's carb Shop close to twenty years ago and haven't seen any smoke or fouled a plug since.

For what it's worth, the float for the Carter is no longer available, and has not been available for several years. If the float is bad in a Carter, you either patch it or junk the whole thing and buy a Zenith.

picked up a rebuild kit for it this morning ...so finger crossed it will fix the issue.

Rebuilt the carter carb did get it to start after some sweet talk!! but the turning the Idle screw has no effect... all the way in or out... it did stopped leaking gas.

If turning the idle screw has no effect one way or the other, the carburetor needs a GOOD cleaning.
