Farmall A here we go again

1943 wartime A with original paint. Sat in barn 20 years. Bought it at auction 3 years ago. Last year when using it to mow it would shut down every 40 minutes, cool off and then go again. The magneto got really hot so I rebuilt the magneto and put in new coil and condenser and every thing was fine. Now, after almost a year the same thing is starting to happen again. Is the something I am missing? What could cause a mag coil to go bad in maybe 30-40 hours. Flustered

When it shuts down you need to see if the trouble is spark or gas probably is spark if it runs that long. You can also use a heat gun to warm the coil and then check spark before and after the heat trick. My experience if it runs that long then no spark it has been the coil I have almost all mags on my 10 As and Bs they are trouble free comnpared to a dist. New condensors are not fool proof and do fail quick.

The moment it shuts down you need to do some simple trouble shooting.
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap at all 4 plugs. If you have that move to the carb if you do not have that try the old condenser if you still have it.
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you get a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less the n3 minutes.
#3 when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water out of it and fill it with new oil

I had problems with the Mag on a B Farmall. Replaced it and ran good for a year. Then it started to quit after 30 mins again. The gas flow to the carburetor was weak at the carb drain. Checking at the sediment bowl it was slow there also. Messed with turning on and off the shutoff valve and it has cleared up.

My BA a tractor I built form 2 Bs and an A had a problem a lot like yours. I found a couple of leaves from who knows where in the gas tank. It would run fine for a while then all at once die but after a couple minutes start back up What was happening was the leaves would get pulled down and cover the gas outlet of the tank and shut off gas flow. Then when no more gas was flowing they would float and it would start beck up just to have it happen over again till I fished them out
