Oil additives

Are there any oil additives that are effective, temporarily, in reducing smoking on a gas motor?
In particular, I have a Honda rototiller that smokes when cold but seems to improve after it gets very hot. Maybe I could just switch to another oil as I'm using 10w-30?

Years ago I had an 8 horse Briggs on a Snapper mower. The engine burned a lot of oil. To remedy it, I tried using 15w-40 and STP, mixed 50-50. Didn't make a speck of difference.

Wrong oil. Use shell rotella T1 straight 50 wt low ash speced SF-2 for two stroke detroits . Less smoke and less fouling.

I have a 1960's 8hp Wisconsin on my leaf collector. I have been using it for 30 years and it was using about 1 pint of oil(10w30) to 2 gallons of gas when I built it. I started putting 20w50 in it about 15 years ago and it cut the consumption about in half. I only use the blower for leaf pickup and it still starts the first time I wrap the rope around it. For as few hours as it gets used, I would run a heavier oil, keep it full and just run it.

A lot depends on what engine it is. If it is very old a thicker oil or if it is one of the valve in head engines it may have some other type of problem.

Let it burn and keep adding oil. Trying to make the oil to thick to pass by the rings will result in some area of the engine being starved for oil.

Sounds like the rings are stuck. When it gets hot they come loose. I have had SOME luck with Rislone oil treatment. About 50% of the time it works. Also what type/weight of oil are you using??? In older motors, that are only ran in the summer, I use straight 30 weight oil. Multi weight oils can be too thin for some small engines.

The rototiller is a 7hp Honda model FR700 with a G300 1cyl 4 stroke motor.
The manual does say that 20w-50 oil can be used in warm climates, so maybe the comment about sticky rings has something to it. I'll ditch the 10w-30 for now and maybe try the 50wt idea from B&D.
Thanks for the responses.
