Case 385 diesel 3 cylinder timing issue

The fuel injector pump and injectors were removed by independent mechanic, pump and injectors were reworked by a very trusty and long established repair facility.

Mechanic fell ill and has not be able to return to install pump and injectors. I took it upon myself to install pump and injectors. Mechanic did not place scribe marks on injector locking ring. Attempted to start tractor only smoke coming out of exhaust.

Removed injector pump and returned to repair facility to find when number one cylinder would get fuel. Reinstalled pump without locking ring, rotated cam shaft until piston number one was at top. That matched TDC on timing mark on front of engine. Manual states 10BTDC, rotated cam shaft to 10BTDC. Installed pump shaft lock ring. Engaged starter and bleed the lines up to injectors. Only colored smoke came out exhaust.

Loosened locking ring and rotated pump shaft in all three possible locations. Within each location engine was rotated in order to try and start engine. Never could get engine to start. Sprayed starting fluid into air intake and engine would run briefly.

Injector Pump is case part number 1329101C91.

What am I doing wrong? Also, what is purpose of o-ring on injectors?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Pecan, the pump is probably 180 degrees out of time. Put the pump drive hub back to its original place and I hope you scribed
a line where the original setting was. Remove the 3 bolts and put a wrench on the pump drive shaft nut and turn the pump 1 rev
in the normal direction of travel. Re-install bolts and try starting tractor again. On the pump mounting plate there should be a
couple scribe marks with a punch dot that the body of the pump is to be aligned with.
In the service manual it tells you how to time the pump using the timing pointer and the front pulley and the internal timing
rings in the pump.

See link to CaseIH parts for sealing O-rings.

There's a chance the pump drive shaft is off internally 180 degrees, between the shaft and cam plate. With the crankshaft at 10 degrees BTDC and both valves closed, NOT on overlap exhaust closing, intake opening the pump cam plate mark should be aligned with the timing tab inside when the shaft key is in the three bolt hub. If that's not possible I'd suspect the shaft is 180 off inside. The shaft key must align with the cam plate plunger drive pin, it can be installed wrong. If it is in wrong the three bolt hub will not align with the gear bolt holes..

Thanks for help JimB2,
The injection pump is not a Bosch as shown in manual, this pump does not have a timing window. The independent mechanic did not put scribe marks on locking ring or pump shaft.

Also, thanks for the case parts link.

Thanks for reply Dieseltech,
The three bolt holes on lock ring line up with the threaded hole on gear ring. I will call repair facility tomorrow and ask if the shaft is possible out 180 degrees. Unfortunately the mechanic who removed the pump did not place punch or scribe marks on any components.

Thanks Dieseltech for tip on injector pump shaft being 180 degrees out. Contacted repair facility which reports this particular pump shaft cannot be installed 180 degrees out of timing.

Any other suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Pecan Man
