OT spine issues

I have a lot of arthritis in my spine from old injuries, I am finding that I am losing strength and feeling in my legs and arms.

Anyone else have that?

I do not take any pain medication, just live with that.

Yes, I've had it for 40 years. I have never taken any pain meds. Main thing seems to be when the pain turns into numbness and muscle atrophy. My neck got like that and I had to get it fused with some of my hi bone. Lower back just gets a lot of pain, but so far - it comes and it goes. No telling what will set it off. I might do hard physical work and it is fine. Another week just sitting around the cursed computer and it goes out. I know one thing. 10-20 years from now - none of this will matter.

I am 57, got injuries when 18, so had it since then, but noticing it is much harder to lift now and losing feeling of touch.

I had many injuries including being run over by a farm tractor (or the guy driving it). It was only a MF35 but still did a lot of damage. I also had my left foot come right off thanks to a run-away Deere 3020.
That all said, I think my lower back problems are just genetics. My mom never had any tractor accidents but had all sorts of lower back pain until she got into her 70s. Then she was fine into her 90s. So, who the heck knows?

I have degenerate disk disease and have had ever since a guy thought I was a punching bag. I take a pain pill when I get up every morning and one at night. Both are anti-inflammatory pain pills so in theory it helps things from getting worse. My doctor force me to retire when he found I was driving truck for a living and told me to limit how much I drove and to take a break every time I drove for an hour or more or I would end up in a wheel chair. So when I do things I work an hour and then take an hour break. Just how life is any more and you have to learn to live with it. Plus it doesn't help to also have a bad right knee and right shoulder and stomach problems. Shoot now days just to mow the lawn it takes me hours to do what should take me less then an hour. Shoot right now the wife is out pushing the mower around the yard. LOL

Maybe developing spinal stenosis?

My Dad had that, but they couldn't do surgery to open things up due to him being a high risk patient.

You need to find a good exercise program that will strengthen the muscles and hold you upright to take the strain and pressure off the spine.

I am having lower back surgery on one of the L something disc next month. I have sciatic nerve pain mostly down my right leg to my ankle. I can't do anything pain is so bad I can hardly walk.lhave to reluy on every one else to do the things I used to do.even had the neighbor do all my hay work this year that's the part that really depresses me I love doing the hay.sure hope they get me fixed because this kind of life is horrible

Sounds like the L-5. I had pretty much the same problem but it was my left leg that I almost could not use. Be sure to follow what the doctor says after you have your surgery or you may end up like I am and still be in pain 24/7 365. Takes 6 months or more the heal so do not push your self like I was MADE to do

Hello David
April 4 th I had syrgery on L4& L5 . My left leg would buckle under for no reason , I tried therapy but nothing worked . Doctor said only surgery would fix my problem of pinched nerve . I had 1 tylnol after Surgery & & 1 when I was released to come home as some of the streets are kinda rough . So far everything is going Great .

David,
Welcome to old age. I have arthritis in right arm and shoulder. It's painful for me to swing a hammer, start a 2 cycle engine.

Both thumbs are full of arthritis. Some times it hurts so much I have difficulty put a minnow on a hook. I grab an impact instead of twisting wrenches.

13 years ago Dr wanted to fuse L4 & L5. I said no way. I can't lift much or twist spine. If I do, I have trouble sleeping. That's when I'll take a Rx pain pill to sleep. I usually sleep on floor to keep spine straight.

I can't do somethings I used to, roofing, framing, drywall.

I have to adapt. Use my terramite instead of my back. Hurts me to use a shovel, wheelbarrow even a push mower is a killer.

Again, welcome to old age. Pain sucks.

If it is cervical and you have numbness and weakness the doctors might get real serious about it. I would see a neurologist. Iowa city isn't that far away from you. The cervical spinal cord is constructed differently compared to the lumbar spinal cord and can create much more serious consequences if not treated properly. See a real doctor. Do not have it crunched. Google is your friend.

Join the club; I had that done twice. First time squeezed out to the right, second time 5 years later to the left. Didn't get the first op soon enough and it crushed the nerves, so lower leg has been mostly dead for 30 years.

90% of back surgery is on that disc and the L5-S1 just below it. Most heavily loaded in your spine.

I had my stenosis diagnosed in 1976, no gap between my vertebrae because of my thin discs.

Yep broke my back at work two years ago. Now if I lift or do too much I lose feeling starting in right leg then it starts getting hard to move my legs. I have been told it's because the tissue around the nerves swells and pinches the nerves limiting the signal getting to the muscles. They tell me If I am not careful and pick up something wrong ect. I will end up in a wheel chair.
