Has anyone changed the power unit in a John Deere 2010. I have heard lots of down things with the engine. Can or has anyone did a complete engine transplant. Maybe different breed all together??? I have done a lot of engine conversions over the years, so I'm no stranger to complete conversions.

Thanks

Both the 1010 and 2010 used the 4 hole sleeve pack which is hard to find and costs and arm and leg if you can find them. As for a different engine fitting well there was an engine used in combines and a few other things that fit but it was pretty much the same junk design as the tractor was

It has the same bolt-pattern as the two-cylinder engines. 1010 and 2010 engines are not all that bad. Much I hear about them in nonsense. Biggest issue with them when it comes to durability was owner abuse and ignorance. The other negative is that they never had much aftermarket parts support, so for many parts - you have to go to Deere.

I guess you can put any engine in if you want to do a lot of adapting work. Or - maybe bolt in a two-cylinder? A 420 two-banger has the same size engine, more or less, as a 1010 gas engine. 113 c.i versus 115 c.i. But a 2010? Big engine. 1010 diesel and 2010 gas use the same sleeves are are 144 cubic inches. 2010 diesel is 165 c.i.

If I had one I liked, I'd just rebuild the engine once, take care of it, and it would outlast me.

Here are a few Deere alternatives:

?H? is ?Harvester Works, ?T? is ?Dubuque?,
?G? is ?gasoline? and ?L? is ?LP gas.?
Some 45 Combines have Hercules JX-4C-3
180 Power Unit (PC1022) is not a 1010/2010 type engine

Deere 45 combine engines:
145 Power Unit ({PC537)
165 Power Unit (PC667)
155 Power Unit (PC624)
165 Power Unit (PC667)
HA217 power unit (PC0568)

HA-155D sleeveless engine used in 45 combine
HB-145L
HB-145G
TA-145G
TA-145L
HA-165D - diesel used in 45 combine - ser # 45-2996 - 45-46000)
HA-165G - gas used in 45 combine - ser # 45-35001 - 45-46000
HB-165D - diesel used in 40 combine
HB-165G - gas used in 111 peanut combine

If the 180 gas will work that also means that any of the 202,219 or 239 diesel family should work as well. The 180 gas used in the last 45 combines is also the same engine used in the gas 2020 and 2510 tractors. I know of several 2510-2520 tractors that have been changed from gas to diesel. Tom

180 will not fit. That is why I wrote that disclaimer in there about it not being a 2010 type engine I guess I should of just deleted it.

That 2010 engine is the same as the 45 combine engines and the up size is the 165 that was in the early square back 45's and also is a very good engine, was that 165 not used in the 2510 tractors? The late 45 combine engines were the 180 and also a very good engine but not interchangeable with the 145 or 165. The bad engine that is giving the tractor engines a bad name is the deisel engine. The good engine is the gas one. And the block is the same for the 115, 145 & 165 engines, just a different deck plate and pistons. Yes harder to get repair parts but that does not make them a bad engine. I had 2 of the 45's with 145, 1 of the 165 and 1 with the 180 so I know what they are like.

Thanks everyone, getting lots of good information here. I think I know where there are a couple of John Deere 45 combines sitting on a hill side here in Oregon. Farmers bone pile!!!! going to have to take a road trip..

Again Thanks everyone

If want to mess with a john deere. Opt for a 1010 instead. Better tractor, and 40 to 435 parts will interchange. Nothing will interchange with a 2010. Dad bought one new. Was trouble from day one. It was a diesel row crop. He bought it to replace a 52 JD. B. The B had a power block. 1/2 inch over bore. It would run circles around the 2010. It was good to bale small square hay.

I posted this at the other thread where you asked the same question. In theory, if you had the SAE engine adapter that I think Deere used to make the little Detroit Diesels fit into the 440s, you could bolt the following engines into a 2010. Note that is just the engine mounting. Matching flywheels and shafts is a different story.

hose little Detroits never had Deere bolt patterns. I suppose Deere used an adapter to make them fit, but cannot say I recall. Detroit 2-53, 3-53, and 3-53 comes with an generic SAE-4 bolt-pattern

So if you have an SAE-adapter from a diesel two-cylinder Deere, in theory - the following engines will fit since these have the same SAE-4 pattern as the Detroits.

Allis Chalmers G188, G149, G221
Chrysler H-225, HC-318
Continental F124, F140, F244
Ford 172, 144 272, 292
Hercules G170, G2000, G2300
Interntional Harvester 68D, 74D, 111D, 132D, UB264
Minneapolis Moline 220
Willys Jeep 134, 230, 226

Unless the tractor has sentimental value you would be much better off finding a different tractor. Nothing's saying that you'll be able to trust the transmission after you've gone to all the trouble to locate and replace the engine.
