"Two Australian Catalina flying-boats, on a night mission over the Lae-Salamaua area of Australian New Guinea lasting four hours, dropped eight 500-pound bombs, twenty 20-pound fragmentation bombs and four dozen empty beer bottles. The beer bottles falling through the air made a screeching sound which helped to terrorise the Japanese troops and spoil their sleep."

Now that you mention it I can't remember ever seeing a documentary involving any front line units that drank beer out of anything but cans.

The Australians had beer in bottles. While in Australia, on their way to New Guinea, my Dad (US Army) claimed they were issued one bottle of beer a day.

(quoted from post at 07:26:15 06/27/17) The Australians had beer in bottles. While in Australia, on their way to New Guinea, my Dad (US Army) claimed they were issued one bottle of beer a day.

My dad fought on New Guinea too. His unit was pulled out to rest and refit then were in on the invasion of the Philippian islands.

Yes, the US military did have canned beer but other countries had their own beer.

My Dad was in Co.F of the 43rd Army Engineers. They built runways at Milne Bay on the Eastern tip of New Guinea. Through Aug. and Sept. of '42 the 43rd fought with Australian infantry and repelled Japanese attacks to take the runways. These attacks were concurrent with the Battle of the Kadoka Trail. Both attacks were to clear the way for the Japanese invasion of Australia. Was your Dad involved in any of this?

U.S. soldiers participating in the 1940-41 Louisiana Maneuvers encamped on my uncle's property. While there they drank a prodigious amount of beer, all in metal cans that resemble a brake fluid can. They dug large holes and buried the empties when they left. For years afterward you could step on soft places in the ground that indicated a beer can repository.
