1294 case fuel problem

I have a mid 80's 1294 Case with a Lucas CAV fuel pump and a 4 cylinder engine. The lift pump is new, the old one was leaking. The filters were recently changed. On the way back from mowing today it quit like it ran out of fuel. It had 3/4 of a tank of fuel. I opened the bleeder on the filter, pumped the lift pump by hand and fuel came out the bleeder. I cranked it and fuel came out the bleeder. I checked in the tank and fuel was spraying from the return line. I cracked the injector lines and cranked it and they leaked fuel. Still when I tried to start it it acts like the stop cable is pulled. I checked the cable at the pump and it's working correctly. We towed it home and coming down a hill I put it in high gear and let the clutch up to hold it back to keep the chain tight. It turned over for about 50 feet and then it started. It seems fine now. Any ideas?

Water in fuel
Restricted vent in cap
Pinched or flattened fuel line, soft hose collapsing and getting sucked flat.
Air restriction
Rock in fuel tank

No, it didn't blow white smoke. I had just pulled a big hill and it ran fine, no unusual smoke and acted fine. Then when the road leveled out it quit like it ran out of fuel.

Make sure if NAPA/WIX brand filters are used the filter top outer groove DOES NOT have an O ring in it, that's the filter inlet. Common mistake is to put one of the extra O rings there, blocking the fuel flow..

I have a Nuffield tractor that sometimes runs out of fuel before the tank is empty, as far as I can figure, the lift pump struggles to keep enough fuel flowing to the injection pump once the tank is less than 1/4 full, I'm think a lift pump or rebuild kit will solve the problem.
It's possible the lift pump you put on is poor. There are some low quality parts around these days.
