What the heck...

...is the fella next door up to? The tenant I mean...used to rent my fields. He has beans this year which is giving me a good bit of relief from the deer who tip toe thru my corn into his field to eat the little bean plants. Hasn't sprayed them yet. Up about 3-4". Today an old truck with a spreader on the back drove up and down throwing a cloud of white granules all over the place. Big tires, lots of damage. Seems like if he wanted to fertilize he shoulda done it BEFORE he planted?

Watch and see if the beans come back after a few days. Brother-in-law has a large smooth roller he uses on soybeans, after they emerge, to smooth the field for easier harvesting. Says it doesn't damage beans significantly.

You can spread or spray soybeans when they are little and not damage them very much if you do the work in the heat of the day. As for spraying them, I spray them 21-28 days after planting. 95% of the weeds will be germinated then. You will get a much better control over spraying earlier. You do have to watch out for aggressive grasses and such an hit them earlier.

I did that for the first time this year. I rented one from a neighbor. Was very nerve racking running over a good stand of beans. The only place there was damage was where you turned around, and an occasional spot where the tractor tires chewed them up. Where the tires got them you can't even tell now. There are some spots on the headlands that won't come back, but I think banging those rocks down is worth it.

Bean yields can actually be increased if the beans are rolled and damaged at the right time. They claim the beans will bush more, creating no more branches for pods. Finding that right time is elusive so trying this is risky.

Take care of those rock problems BEFORE the beans come up not after. And I have NEVER seen a bean dammaged by a tractor tire recover, always tell at harvest where the tire went, only exception is when they are just breaking through the ground. To me that is the sign of a poor farmer that I would not want as a renter.

I see them spray beans and wheat after they come up here. I think they wait until the weeds come up. I saw the guys doing a lot of soil sampling in the fields near me, the folks who inherited the farm are willing to do more modern things than the old folks were.

Come on over know it all. You'll never get all the rocks off this field. I'd never want to rent from an armchair quarter back like yourself, so it looks like we'll never be doing business together.

How old are you? I think I was farming before you were born or even thought of. Retired now.
