Okiver 550 misses under load

I have an Oliver 550 gas that I use infrequently. I am using it some this week to spray standing corn, it's my only tractor that is on 60" centers. Starts and idles fairly well, and runs ok. It pulls ok, and pulls down smoothly under load. Once it pulls down far enough, it starts missing badly, and power really drops off. It does the same if it's idling and you fully open the throttle quickly. I had the carb off, good flow of fuel, all passages seem clear. I filed the points and checked gap. While doing this I opened and closed them several times and wasn't getting reliable spark. The resistance of the cool was kind of bouncing around, and was 0 sometimes, so I assumed it had a short and replaced. Maybe a little better, but it still cuts out under full load. When it cuts out it sounds like one cylinder drops out, the engine sound is uniform, just not smooth. What do I need to check next? Plug wires all look good, and I misted some water on them with no effect. It does the same thing hot or cold, and whether it's been running an hour or as soon as you start it. Thanks,
Josh

I will bet that it is ignition related. So did you change the condenser??? IF not do so. Also the rotor button and/or cap. I have seen rotor buttons short out internally too.

I think it's ignition related too. I did not change the condensor but I should have one. I'll give it a try. I have this and one other older gas tractor. It seems like no matter what I do I can't keep them running reliably. thanks,
Josh

Does sound ignition related.

Did you check the distributor advance weights for binding, and the shaft for side play? It needs to be really tight or the points setting will change.

Also, the quality of todays ignition points and condensers is questionable. They don't like sitting unused either.

Would you consider a Pertronix ignition?

When it starts missing, carefully pull one spark plug wire off at a time and see if one plug is bad. If the miss doesn't get worse, reconnect the plug wire. If the wire you remove doesn't change the miss, you've found the bad cylinder. It could be many things but rule out the simplest possibilities first.

You're sure the point gap is right then? My 1550 had a bad habit of the points closing up on it. It would act just like you describe until I'd open them up a little more.

Yes, I checked it twice. I thought the same thing that you did. I am sure I have another set around so I may just replace points and condensor and see if there is improvement.

Problem solved. Spark plugs were fouled. I was surprised since it started and ran good and only showed up under heavy load. Put an older but good set of points and condensor, replaced a suspect spark plug wire end and no improvement. Didn't have anything to lose so pulled the plugs and cleaned them. Fired right up and ran smooth. Sprayed 17 acres of corn. More to go tomorow. Thanks,
Josh
