They have personalities

My tractors have personalities. I have a 1950 M farmall, looks really rough. It burns some oil, probably through the valve guides, 2 different sized rear tires, rusty, in short it looks like he11. I have a Farmall H too. Looks pretty good, newer tires, good paint, runs like a top. The difference is the M will start each and every time (except this morning when the starter fried) the H will start every time you don't need it to. If I need to move snow it won't start, if it is parked in the way it won't start, this morning I needed it to move my generator because the starter went out of my M, it wouldn't start. However if I went to it on some day and decided to see why it won't start it would start. Also have a B that I mow with and is hand start only because batteries don't last long, that one starts perfect when it's cold every time.

Greg,
I got my Farmall C form my mom. It was painted red, but faded to look more like an Allis Chalmers, so we call her Alice. She runs like new. Always starts, been rebuilt, new shoes, new lipstick. Put a 6 ft woods belly mower on her and a reese hitch to pull dump trailer. She is a 67 year old working girl with a very pleasant personality, never complains, very easy on gas. No plans for retirement or drawing SS anytime soon. The boss loves mowing with her too.

I just picked up a 2510 that must be female. Looks good on the outside but I'm finding out its going to be ugly on the inside. It also seems to be jealous of other females. Whenever my sister tries to start it all it does is spin and not take a shot. I get in the seat right behind her and it fires up the second I push the button.

Fighter pilots will tell you that in a squadron of up to 24 identical fighter planes, each one has its own personality.

An H is one of the best starting tractors ever made when everything is right. Intermittent problems like you describe can be a real pain where you sit to figure out. You mention starter going on the M - that's why I maintain the old manual crank system on mine as a back up. I don't believe starters can be swapped between an H and M - they are on opposite sides the tractor and the bolt holes won't line up.

My tractors all have personality to. I do have nine tractors on board at my place each one is different in it self. My 51 Farmall M cotton picker has be rolled to it side two times and it still runs strong. They 1956 John Deere has been threw two field fires and been vandalized but it is still wanting to be restored. The 1930 Case Orchard tractor has just been used and till it looks like junk but it still runs and starts up with the first two cranks . My first one I ever owned I call it my sweet heart runs great, always start up even though it has set for the months. My 1950 Allis Chalmers model B. Yes I agree all tractors are different in there only way. Just like Automobiles they are the same. I have two classic cars and they to have a different personality to them to.

The instruments sound sweet, but the vocals have been mixed to be almost incomprehensible to these old ears.

Too bad, I think I'd like it, but I'm too lazy to listen that hard.

i discovered that the last tractor to go in the barn blocking all the rest in is the one that wont start. doesnt matter which one gets the pole position. i really think my barn is over run with shed gnomes just out to p### me off!!!

I always figured tractors are sort of like the draft horses before their time. If you mistreat them they'll come back and punish you. I'm too young to remember working with horses but I always had an affection for a good machine. Take care of it and it takes care of you.

Same thing with trucks. You can have ten trucks of any one kind sitting on the yard with every thing exactly the same, and no two of them will be the same to drive. They all have their differences.
