Looking for a mechanics truck

My buddy called me this afternoon with a HUGE problem. He quite his job with a rental house, and started his own mechanic business awhile back. Until today he had been working with a 3/4 ton Dodge, flatbed, truck that he had added tool boxes, etc to.

He was doing fine when he started, but between his existing customers, ones he picked up on his own, and a few I sent his way when I couldn't get to them in time (and we now share), he got swamped with work, and the truck became way too small in a hurry.

Now, the problem..... When he called me today, his truck had just broken the U-bolts holding the rear axel. The result was major damage in the way of broken springs, a mangled driveline, a severly damaged fuel tank, etc, etc, etc.

As it stands, he's stuck with nothing but a Toyota pickup and a small trailer, so he's essentially out of business until he can find another truck.

He's been looing for a truck for awhile now, and I've been helping him look. Right now I've got a line on my Dad's old C6500. He sold it to the guys he was working for and he was the only one to ever drive it. Since Dad's now, basically, being forced to quit working due to medical issues with his shoulder (not to mention he told then when he turned 70 in August he was packing it up), and they really don't have anyone to put in it, I'm hoping they may be willing to let it go.

Even so, I figured I'd hedge my bets and ask around on here to see if anyone knows of a mechanics truck for sale for a reasonable price. By reasonable, I'm going to say under $30,000. I know my buddy has found quite a few trucks for way over that, but those aren't in the budget.

What he needs, and has been looking for size wise, is something like a C6500, Kodiac, F650, FL70, etc. Basically a larger truck, but still under 26,001 Gross so there is no CDL requirements.

This size truck will typically have a 6000 to 8000 lb crane, and having a crane is mandatory. That's one of the things that was killing him the most with the flatbed he had.

I know I said he's been looking for a larger truck, but at the moment I think he'd be willing to settle for even a usable F450, etc as long as it was equipped with at least a 6,000 lb crane. Any less and it's pretty much worthless for the equipment he's working on, just as it would be for me.

That said, if anyone knows of a good mechanics, crane, truck for sale anywhere East of the Mississippi, please let me know, and I will pass it on.

Thanks, Wayne

I have looked at trucks on truckpaper.com as I have been shopping or pricing new truck to less then year old. might find something there or get a lead.

Probably not what he's looking for as it's gas, but I recently picked up a 2000 GMC C5500 with 24' box - former U-haul. Has relatively low miles, runs and drives GREAT!! I'll be removing the box eventually to build a flatbed. Anyway, paid under $6k. ...I got lucky!!

Only fault I can find with this truck is, there is a very minute coolant leak - I'm suspecting from the water pump, but haven't taken time to inspect further. Starts at the bump of a key, is auto (just in case the wife ever needs to drive/move it), and even has A/C. Is also a little over 18,000 GVW. Has 454 gas engine, so will start on even the coldest day up here.

Anyway, might be something to keep in mind just in case.

Guess I better check my u bolts this is my service truck just have boxes added to it not a real service truck but it's perfect for the farm

Wolfe and Cochran two auctioneers in the MD,VA,WV,PA area around I81 have a lot of Commercial sales for power companies and similar companies that sell the kind of trucks your
buddy is looking for.

Rock & Dirt. I know time is of the essence here, But I think the best deals can be had in the auction section. If he could just hang on til the next one comes along...

well it a Drive up this way , but i have seen several up here in Ohio listed on craig's list . They are a lot more then i need now being semi retired as all i need is my one ton , i just need to get the frame fixed and take the 9 foot box off and put my mechanic body on sine i am getting to old to keep climbing up and down into the out house . There are several Mack's seen some ford's/ Sterlings and some binders listed . Do a search tempest check .

On my Dodge it's not the U bolts that is the problem , Its the bottom flange of the frame and the klunk that i can not find I have to cut out 30 inches of the bottom of the frame rails both sides due to rust thrus .

I'd like to see pics of that I had a clunk to but it was the exhaust hangers broke and it was clanging around also the track bar was loose so I rebuilt it

Thanks guys. I forwarded a few of the ones shown to him. I know he's looking at a handful of them already, and with these added the mix, I'm sure he'll find what he wants.

Wayne, check out Iron Horse Auctions sale in Advance, NC. It is an online bid only and they close on June 20th. They have a International 4700 with service bed and I think a crane and a small flat dump bed. The site of the sale is 3 miles from my house. I live between Winston-Salem and Statesville.

Look at any Ritchie Bros. auction, they always have a bunch of them.

There's one in Raleigh-Durham on the 27th of June.
