Need new tires for trailer

Made a trip to where the trailer is stored,to check if the backer plates are bolted on like Jon said. The plates are bolted on not welded so I guess that makes them low boy axles. Check a few web sites, and I can get the backer plates, shoes, magnets, the whole thing for $50 to $75 dollars. Two axles $200 to $300 dollars, so that will take care of the brakes. I'm still looking for the tires.8.00 X14.5 14 ply. It seems all I can find locally are 12 ply SamSon and I won't buy them. Need to look farther away I guess.

I built a goose neck trailer in 1976 and used trailer house axles. Needed to cut them in the center and reweld as they were too wide. Added a 5' beavertail a few years ago and use it quite a lot. It has bolted back plates. I buy low boy tires from the Firestone dealer. Not sure on the brand but have never got a lot of miles on a set. Maybe the smaller diameter has something to do with it as they would turn faster than a 16" tire.

Make sure you check the spindle size before you order hubs as there are 2 different ones. I just ordered a 7k axle with brakes and u-bolts and the price came to just over $400.00 from redneck. As I said before, if you decide to change axles and tires make sure you have clearance under the bed. In my experience, if you are going to do much modifying it is usually cheaper to sell what you have and start new. The cost to make all the changes is just too high. 2 axles at 250 ea 4 brakes at 50, 4 u-bolts kits at 25, likely a suspension kit at 100 and 4 tires at 150, rims at 100 and you have nearly 2,000.00 in an old trailer. Used wheels and tires will save some, but you still get nothing for your labor. And if you have to add a spacer to raise the bed to cllear the tires you can add a couple hundred more. I'm all for a project and have no problem helping however I can, just make sure you add all the costs so your not surprised.

I'm going to buy 4 of the backer plate assemblies because it seems to be cheaper than buying the parts individually. I bought this trailer in 2007, and it is in excellent condition. It has been stored every winter and has never been on the roads with all the salt. The original tires lasted 7 years. I think I will call the company who made it and see what kind of tires they are putting on their trailers now. I am going down that way next Sat. to an auction. Thanks Jon

I did what your thinking years ago on my trailer and one thing I found out is that with 16" tires the springs are too short you will only have a couple of inches between the tires I had to get longer springs to get the correct spacing I left the equalizer mount where it was and moved the front hanger forward and the rear mount backward
