can I tow my JD 2750?

Baling all day with my JD 2750, doing just fine, but toward the end of the day when I went to restart, nothing, starter just barely turned the engine over and then didn't have enough to get more than a click out of the solenoid. Jumping did not do the trick. turns out that the batteries are 8 years old and even though they have done fine with a battery tender, I think they are toast and will replace them tomorrow. If that doesn't solve the problem (alternator has been rebuilt by the way)I will pull the starter and try to see if the solenoid is burnt. So here's the question: can I tow this tractor in neutral the 1/4 mile to my shop, or is it going to do something awful to the HI LO? I have heard stories about ruining the hi lo by towing the tractor in gear to try to start it, but can I just tow it home where the tools and conveniences are?

As long as you have the range shifter in neutral you can tow the tractor without damaging the Hi-Lo. Take it slow and easy.

flying Belgian: On JD utility tractor with a Hi-Lo clutch pack trying to pull start it can ruin the clutch pack in a very little distance. The clutches need hydraulic oil pressure to close. So with the tractor not running they will not hold and just slip. Also there is no lube oil being pumped into the clutch or housing. I have seen not only the clutch pack ruined but also the housing it turns in.

This is not just a JD issue either. Most tractors with a hydraulic clutch pack in the drive line would have the same issue. So that are spring loaded in one direction can be pulled but most can not.

I have a question regarding this.
How come they hold when tractor is parked on a steep hill??? With the engine off. Of course we are talking about a 50 or 55 utility series here.
I sometimes have to do that because my emergency brake won't hold it while I get out and open or close a gate. Mine all shift themselves to the lo side soon after shutting them off so they can't be parked or coast started on the Hi side anyhow.

Not the same then. I believe the only time it's under any pressure is when it's on the Hi side. That is why it automatically kicks off the Hi side right after you shut it down and the pressure drops, levers then move to the Lo side. Happens on both my 2550 and my 2755.

If you have the operator's manual, there should be towing instructions/warnings in the manual.

Because jump starting did not work, I suspect you could have multiple problems: weak batteries (check the voltage with a volt meter and the acid in each cell with a hydrometer); corroded connections or corroded cables (look for voltage drops across connections while trying to crank the engine); failing solenoid or starter.

Replacing the batteries in the field should not be a big job. If your batteries were newer, I would find the problem(s) before buying new batteries or other parts.

Thank you JDSeller. Towed home no problems. Batteries kaput and connections crusty. nothing wrong with starter. Now back in action. Just wanted to be sure not to make one problem into two. Appreciation.
