Got new engine from Small Engine Warehouse in Muncie In a couple weeks ago. 2 day delivery, good price, $65 delivery to Central Ia.
Bad, mounting holes not tapped
Called today to comment. Customer service said manufacturers not doing that anymore. My guess is some should be 10 mm and some 3/8 -16 in my case. Actually mine might have been metric but is now 3/8. Very close to same sizes

I can see that. Many parts and assemblies are now made to fit multiple applications. Look how often someone posts about the extra gaskets and O-rings in a gasket set.

I prefer a bolt and nut in a case like that if it is aluminum case. If cast Iron tapped is good.

Yes, I've been seeing that for a long time now, especially on the small vertical shaft engines.

The holes are not threaded, the bolts are a displacement type thread, a 3 sided configuration that just forces it's way in, then is self locking.

Looks kinda scary going into cast aluminum!

DEAN Bhas it righ . I have run into several mounts that use self tap bolts. The bolts look a little goofy with a rounded and threaded end on them. They do work. You can buy them at fastenall. No need to use a tap.

I just paid 75.00 dollars for a mower deck spindle.Bolts no longer included. Guess they could no longer afford to give away 20 cents.

Mike,
My 20 hp horizontal shaft kohler command uses bolts and nuts.

No big deal to tap aluminum and use SAE threads.

I know a man who ordered a briggs engine from small engine warehouse. It was a vertical shaft and I had to tap it. He was very pleased with small engine warehouse.

I would also prefer bolts and nuts, however all the holes were blind, no way to use a nut.
