row crop 4320 dies when idling

Recently my 4320 row crop diesel has been suddenly dying after idling for a few minutes. It will then not re-start for 20-30 minutes. After sitting for that long it will re-start and run just fine. It's like the fuel gets shut off. Each time it has died is during idling. Any ideas on what my problem may be?

Yes, your return fitting on the injector pump is clogging up with little bits of a coupling ring inside the pump, you can remove the return fitting at the pump, then remove the little washer, check ball and spring leave them out and reinstall the fitting,,this will let you work it for a few months to a year or so, but plan a pump rebuild when you can..

If fuel supply to the injection pump is OK, it may be a sticking metering valve, or sticking plungers. Idle speed should be 800 RPM, if lower set it back up and see if that helps. With the engine at 2000 RPM or more, and the throttle brought back to idle quickly does the engine die or under run idle speed, then come back up a bit? If so that's the metering valve sticking. More common is the retainer ring is breaking apart inside, then when housing pressure rises equal to transfer pressure the plungers no longer move during the charging cycle, and fuel delivery stops. Wait awhile and it will start up again. I just repaired an IH 856 pump for the same problem.

First read what TimS said. If not on mine it was sticking linkages in the pump. About 8oz of 2cycle oil in the fuel fixed it right up.

Mine it would run and operate just fine until it got hot. Then when idling down it wold slow to a stall. It wouldn't restart until it cooled for 25-20 minutes. One time it wouldn't start until I took the cover off the pump a twiddled the linkages, it then would restart.

Cold water on the pump until it's cooled. Does it then restart? In any case it sounds like it's time to open up the pump and refresh the components that deteriorate with heat and exposure to fuel.
