I wish you two hadn't started that. Now I'm going to have to look up the lyrica
S. What is the acttual name of that song?

I always thought they throw off a baby. The family sets around eating and talking about the suicide and not realize Billy Joes girlfriend is their daughter.

While the Little Tallahatchie River crosses I55 that is not the bridge in the song. That section of I55 was not even built when the song came out in the late 60's. In fact that part of Mississippi is not the delta area.

South west of where you are thinking of and about 30 miles east of I55 is a small town (couple hundred people) of Money Miss there was a old wooden bridge that crossed the river. This is the bridge in the song. The bridge did not last but a few years after the song came out as it was set afire by vandals and collapsed in the early 70's. The bridge was later rebuilt with a concrete bridge.

There's been lots of conjecture, but I'm thinking it was Billie Joe's mother in law. At least it would be a good way to bet.

Finally, a part of the world I know! I was raised around there, dad's family lived between Money and Teoc. My oldest sister was born in a house in the hills.

I do remember the song. Did some turtle shooting of that bridge when I was young. Spent lot of hours in Money as a kid (could never figure why they called it Money, cause no one there ever saw any). My recollection was we all thought it was a baby she thru from the bridge.

Best thing I remember about the song when it became famous, Bobbie Gentry was 6 or so years older than me. She was so pretty and she could sing. At 16 or so, I was impressed.

They made a movie about the song, saw it in a drive in theater when I was in High School, I was driving a '63 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible with 3 deuces.

It was Billy Joe who jumped off the bridge. Forgive me here, as I'm quoting lyrics from memory
"and now they tell me Billy Joe has gone and jumped the Tallahatchie bridge"
and
"Pappa said 'boy never had a lick a'sense anyway"

Wow, that goes back a long way. I must be getting old, but thankfully not completely senile (yet).
