Older Ford F150

My son has a 1996 F150 we will be using for hauling hay this summer. It has the quad shock front (4X4) and they are shot. Can they be replaced with a single shock per side? If so - do you only use the shock mount behind the front axle? Finding the quad shocks for the front is turning into a PIA.

Anyone had much luck using the "load shocks" on the back that include a coil spring?

Local parts store had them all in stock for mine. But I was told the rearward shock is the one that can be used as a single shock. Gabriel G63414. Shocks in front are Gabriel G63410.

I don't see why the front shocks couldn't be replaced with singles.

As for the "overload shocks", I personally don't like them. Seen a lot of shock mounts broken, torn out of the frame.

Better off adding a leaf to the springs, or maybe adding some overload springs that contact only when needed.

You can just use the rearmost shocks, new coil springs aren't very much money and worth every penny. I went up one spring rate when I replaced mine....works great.
