Was very nice.
I am a member of the Sons of the American Legion in my hometown about 40 miles away and like to combine attendence with visiting the folks as Mom's birthday (94 this year) is May 31 and Dad is a veteran of WW-II and Korea.

Gotta love a small town Memorial Day service. I'm also a SAL member and we went to my old hometown cemetery in Loogootee Indiana today and placed flowers on my moms n grandparent graves plus visited several other aunts n uncles n cousins graves. As my one cousin says with all our previous generation gone THE NEXT BUS HAS OUR NAME ON IT. The we drive by where we used to live or other friends or relatives did although many of those old homes are torn down, its a day to remember family and thank Veterans.

I hate to be a wet blanket here - but as a Federal holiday, Memorial day certainly is NOT to honor "family and veterans." It is a day to remember those killed while in service. As far as Federal holidays go - "Veterans Day" it the official day to remember and honor veterans.

Anybody can remember and/or honor whoever or whatever they want, whenever they want. But as far as the official reason for Memorial Day, it has only one reason. Started out to be for Union soliders killed in the Civil War and later on, got expanded to all our servicemen (and women) killed while in service.

I've been hearing taxpayer funded info-mercials all week about the importance of Memorial Day and am kind of disgusted how so many got it wrong.

Our Memorial Day service is tomorrow. I am the rifle squad Cadre. My Dad read all the Veterans names when he was in our local Legion. He passed 5 years ago 5.12.12.

Boy oh Boy,
Guess you don't have any respect for our former and current military members !!!
Where you at ? California, New Yawk, or ???
Just so we can reply back.

I think you missed the thrust of the above comment. You won't like me at all - memorializing war is not in my pervue. Remembering those that gave the ultimate sacrifice is, however, we must remember that 'almost' all of the participants were drafted and had no choice. -Zip away. HPH

Hey. Memorial Day is officially dedicated for one purpose Honoring the people who were killed in service. Not those that survived. Has nothing to to with where I live (northern Michigan).

If anyone is showing any lack of respect here, it is those to choose to make it something else, that takes away from its original purpose. My dad and his brother both served in WWII and were both pretty dead-set about the purpose of the holidays.

So tell me Kruser - what does honoring those killed in service, have to do with "not honoring veterans" as you claim?

I"m with you on this one...Memorial Day is when we honor our war dead. Veterans Day is when we honor our veterans. So pick another day to put flowers on Aunt Mathilda"s grave, or Uncle Ernie"s, the draft dodger.

WOW! Typical conservative trying to make fun of people because of where they're from! So what, if he was from California or New York! What does that mean? Another Typical Trumptard! Can spot them from a mile away!
