1st cutting hay in barn

I cut my 7 acres and cut a few acres for two friends of mine. Had almost 6 days of sun, above average temps, and no humidity which is rare in central IL in May. Yields were significantly less than last year, but I got it cut and baled with no rain. Grasses were just past boot stage and alfalfa was budded but not quite blooming so the quality is sure there. I'd like to get it tested somewhere. I have half of the first cut sold already and until second cut is in the barn I'm keeping it for my cows.

Ended up making 397 small squares on roughly 12 acres. My old 24T baler made it to #394 before having a broken bale in the chamber for no apparent reason. It missed one earlier at twine ball change where it was trying to tie a knot over the splice in twine balls. My 13 year old boy made some big strides in his ability to stack hay on a rack. I get 5 layers and a tie layer on a 7x14 rack for 88 bales, he was able to get 4 layers and a tie for a total of 72. Think I'm going to upgrade from my JD 894 rake this season. Maybe find a nice NH 256 for sale local.

I hated sitting in the dusty corner of the Case wire hand tie baler, to tie the two wires together on each bale; that dust bothered my allergies a lot. Those bales were much heavier than twine bales, but the summer that I was 15 I volunteered to ride the wagon all summer so I didn't have to tie the wires. I had the muscles to start with to pile 5 high; didn't take long to start piling the bales 6 high on the wagons.

Now in my old age I'm not supposed to lift over 10 libs.

Sounds like you're off to a good start. I'm still trying to figure out which field is going to be first. Probably at least two weeks out. Should get the baler out and warm it out rebaling what broke in the hay mow last winter.

It has got to be pretty high odds that in 9,000 feet of twine that the knot is going to go into the knotter but I suppose if bale enough hay it is going to happen some time.

There sure was a lot of hay made in the area last week. I am a bit behind on hay but getting corn and beans in is the priority over hay for me. I guess I should at least get the mower out and serviced for the season.

I might be able to help you out with the 256 hay rake if you are interested.

I'm interested in 256.

A lot of first cut around here gets over-ripe because row crops are priority.
