My IH 884 has had a chronic leak of compression into the cooling system for some time, so I decided to overhaul the engine. I am replacing all of the injectors. Three of the injectors came out easily and fairly clean but the #2 cyl injector came out with real difficulty and in the condition in the photos. Does this indicate a problem further inside--perhaps with the injector sleeve? Could this possibly suggest where the compression leak was?

Thanks Dieseltech! That was my suspicion, also. Could this possibly be the source of the compression leak into the cooling system? I'm not very familiar with the function of the sleeve. Is the seat for the nozzle body in the sleeve or below? As far as replacing the injectors vs. just the tips is concerned, I simply have to plead ignorance.

The lower sleeve tapered end seals the compression, but if it's leaking it seeps right into the coolant. Injector tip nut seals the compression inside, if it leaks there you will see that blowing between the injector and sleeve. Since there is no injector compression gasket sleeve must be clean. Had one seeping compression on my Hydro 84, finally sealed after a second cleaning of the tapered ID.

where in Indiana are you? Finally getting around to the cockshutt 50 I talked with you about last year. Do you refurbish diesel heads with deeper valve seats to I increase compression? Got to take pump off before trying to turn over as you suggested. May just take a drive to bring parts. I have top ring land damage and wear on pistons. What about leaving top ring off? Would not this also lower compression , causing poor starting?

Here's the nozzle sleeve replacement procedure, also shows a cross section of the sleeve in the head so you can see how compression could leak into the cooling system through the nozzle sleeve.
